| MORAY MICRO FESTIVAL - 26/05/13 |

 After a hot summer’s day on Saturday, the cooler breeze and temperatures were a welcome relief, for the Micro (P1-3) boys and girls who came together for their own festival at Morriston Playing Fields last Sunday.
Micro players don’t have the same opportunities as their fellow team mates at Mini (P4-7) level. So, to offer them their own day in warmer weather was a gesture welcomed by Banff and KInloss.
Micros play with velcro tags and belts avoid full contact.
The three sides played using Positive Coaching Scotland scoring guidelines , which involves scoring of not only the number of tries but also, assessment of player’s individual skills, team ethos, sportsmanship and respect of the referee. Each element is scored to ensure that players are learning the wider perspective of the game, rather than just winning, but children still came up to the scoring table, asking that very question. So competitive at such a young age!!
Kinloss and Banff have sides which are still evolving, while thanks to committed coaches, 20+ players regularly attend Sunday morning training at Moray RFC which showed itself, in a slightly more direct and skilled style of play throughout the festival.
The phrase “run forward” was still regularly heard as young players found their feet and the right direction to run in! Despite this good handling and running skills were on display, which is a very positive sign for the future.
 After a prolonged first cycle of round robin matches scheduled for 10 minutes each, the second cycle had to be reduced to 7 minutes per game, which enabled the festival to finish closer to the scheduled finishing time.
Families brought picnics to benefit from the open air to watch the matches and as parents became more excited at watching their offspring compete, the noise levels grew.
After a morning’s rugby and all the scores were tallied, the festival outcome resulted in a win for Moray. This was a repeat of the Micro/Mini festival at Morriston in March, on a much colder day!
Refreshments were welcomed by parents who helped ‘boost the coffers’. Once again thanks to parents who volunteered to organise and run this.
Thanks also must go to all the players, coaches and parents, for making the event so successful, aswell as George Whitecross the Moray Rugby Development Officer, who helped to officiate during the morning.
All three clubs are still looking to expand their Micro playing numbers, so if any budding rugby stars of the future who live near to Moray, Kinloss or Banff RFCs and would like to join up, should look to the start of next season, to register and get involved.
