CAITHNESS/ORKNEY 22 MORAY/HUNTLY/ROSS SUTHERLAND U18 17
Wed 31st Jan 2018
Moray, Huntly and Ross Sutherland u18’s made the long trip up to Caithness on Saturday to play their u18 Cally Cup match v Caithness and Orkney.

In windy conditions it was the home team that prevailed and gained a hard-fought victory by 22 points to 17.

Muntly Ross kicked off with a strong wind at their backs, but it was the home team that adapted quickest to the conditions and they played a tight game using pick and drive tactics to retain possession and gain territory.

They opened the score with a try after 15 minutes but failed to convert it.

Muntly Ross slowly began to gain more possession and territory as the half progressed and just before half time, after a series of penalties in the home teams 22, they sucked in the defence with a set of rucks before moving the ball wide for flanker Findlay Graham to cross the line.

A difficult conversion was missed to leave the score at 5 points all at half time.

The visitors knew they would have to up their game playing into a strong wind in the 2nd half and they began brightly and with much more purpose.

Caithness were forced to defend repeated attacks from the visitors, but the pressure eventually told on 45 minutes when a clearance kick was charged down under the posts and good following up by flanker Findlay Graham ensured he got the try.

Fraser Mohun converted to get the visitors in front at 5-12. Muntly Ross continued to control the game from the restart and used the right tactics by keeping the ball tight and using driving play to break the gain line.

Aidan O’Hare picked a good line to break the defence from 10 m out and extend the lead to 5-17 after 50 minutes.

Caithness Orkney were not going to lie down though, and they came back into the contest, forcing play deep into the visitor’s half and scored on 55 minutes to cut the deficit to 5 points.

They followed up with another try 5 minutes later to tie the match at 17-17 and setup a nail biting finish.

With 5 minutes left on the clock, Caithness Orkney won a scrum 10 m out and their scrum-half picked up and went down the blind side to score the winning try.

This was an entertaining game between 2 sides who hadn’t played since before Christmas due to the weather and although the early stages had some rusty play, all players quickly adapted with both sides totally committed in defence and attack.

Moray-Huntly and Ross Sutherland now face Granite City on Saturday in round 1 of the Cally Shield
