MUNTLY U13/14S FINISH THE CONFERENCE UNBEATEN AFTER PUTTING AWAY CAITHNESS |
Wed 13th Dec 2017 |
For the second season running, Muntly ran unbeaten through their Northern Conference Fixture list with a fine win over Caithness at the weekend.
Frosty conditions and plummeting temperatures made conditions difficult on a slippy pitch; however Muntly set the tone right from the off.
With the Kick-off safely gathered, Prop Charlie Anderson broke down the right and, after several phases moving the ball left, scrum-half George Lunn picked from the base of a ruck to sprint over on the blind side.
Muntly dominated the first period and effectively put the fixture to bed by running in a further 6 tries.
Centre Mylo McBain added a quick fire double with the first a result of excellent counter-rucking from the pack; the second was the result of quick handling from a tap penalty and he was set free on the left.
Not wishing to be left out, the forwards decided to get in on the act and charging second-row Gregor Clark popped to Anderson at short range after a tap penalty for the next score.
Muntly then started to shift through the gears and quick ruck ball aplenty was supplied to the backs.
Centre Lewis Hay had 2 good breaks down the right before the ball was switched back left to find winger Roddy Manson at the end of the back-line; still with plenty to do, he straightened his running line and burst through a gap to escape the defence and dot down.
With the Muntly defence also working well and managing to turnover a significant amount of ball, an Anderson pick up after a Jake Harrison tackle set centre Innes Parkin away down the right and he deftly slipped the ball inside to the supporting Clark to cross for his first of the day.
Muntly concluded the first period with a fine individual effort from fly-half Murdo Reid.
With quick scrum ball he switched the attack left and sold 3 outrageous dummies to scamper clear and leave the Caithness defence clutching at thin air.
Having rung the changes, and with cold and fatigue acting as a great leveller, the second period proved to be much tighter and scores were traded evenly throughout.
Caithness caught the Muntly defence on the hop at the restart and some lax Muntly tackling allowed the visitors to open their account.
Immediately from the restart Muntly replied and Clark rampaged over from half way for his second of the day.
With Muntly personnel helping to make up the numbers for their visitors, Lunn was soon on the scoresheet for his second, albeit in the green of Caithness.
Once again Clark went on the charge from the restart and sloppy Caithness tackling allowed him through to complete his hat-trick.
Dominating once again, it appeared that Muntly had once more found their rhythm when a sharp scrum win against the head, by hooker Rory Cameron, allowed scrum-half Jake Harrison to escape and set winger Linton Muckle away into the corner.
However, having never given up or let their heads drop, Caithness had the last word after their best period of the afternoon, when their centre picked a delightful line to scythe in and score.
With the sun having dropped below the treeline and temperatures falling further, the final whistle blew with the score Muntly 30 – Caithness 9.
This was a good all-round performance from both sides how worked hard in freezing conditions and a difficult pitch.
High credit must go to both a valiant Caithness team that had endured the weather and road conditions down the A9 and to the Muntly youngsters who were happy to pull on a green shirt and help their opponents out.
