Thu 16th Nov 2017 |
Muntly u18’s welcomed Kirkcaldy up to Morriston for their penultimate Cally u18 league match
With both teams minus players due to the Scotland v Samoa match and injuries, Ross Sutherland stepped in and provided backup to let the game go ahead.
An entertaining match ensued and Muntly ran out winners by 56 points to 5.
Kirkcaldy kicked off and missed an early opportunity to open the score when a penalty kick went wide.
They maintained their early pressure and scored a try on 10 minutes from a tap penalty.
Muntly quickly replied with a try by no 8 Mitchell after good work by scrum half Millar.
5 minutes later Millar kept up the pressure and stole the ball from a Kirkcaldy scrum on 10m before offloading to Coursar who touched down for the try. Mitchell extended the Muntly lead on 20 minutes with a no8 pick up in the 22 and he powered over from 10m out.
Straight away from the restart Muntly kept attacking with a well-placed kick by standoff Mohun and good following up by centre Cotton allowed him to strip the ball from Kirkcaldy’s full back and go over to score.
Coursar completed the first half with a try after Millar had won the ball at a Kirkcaldy scrum in the home team’s 22.
Muntly continued to improve in the second half and were rewarded with tries for Jones who ran the length off the pitch to score and 2nd row Christie who powered through the midfield from half way on 55 minutes.
5 minutes later Cotton finished off a good move from a set scrum with a try in the corner.
Prop Duncan finished off the afternoons work with 2 well taken tries.
This was a fine all-round team performance and big improvement after the previous week’s defeat at Madras.
The pack secured good ball in the set piece and dominated the scrum on Kirkcaldy’s put in.
Hooker Nicol carried well and was good in the loose play.
2nd rows Walker and Christie did the hard work in the engine to ensure a powerful scrum was dominant throughout the game.
No8 Mitchell was a powerful presence in loose play and off the back of the scrum.
In the backs Millar had an excellent game at scrum half and linked well with No10 Mohun.
Centres Cotton and Van West kept the middle field tightly defended and were quick to support in attack.
Winger Coursar and full back Jones were potent in attack and used their speed to great effect.
