YOUNGSTERS SHINE AS MUNTLY U13/14S WIN OVER THE WATER AT STORNOWAY |
Thu 16th Nov 2017 |
A young squad of Muntly U13/14s weathered the storm on the ferry before creating a storm of their own with a dominating performance to beat their island hosts.
With a number of regular starters unavailable due to injury or other commitments, it was a predominately U13 team that took to the field and their excellent start set the foundations for a convincing squad performance and victory.
Muntly dominated territory from the off when full-back Fraser Whitecross and winger Linton Muckle combined to break from the kick-off only to be thwarted just short of the Stornoway line.
A Muntly knock-on and subsequent scrum saw the Stornoway pack and half-backs come under considerable pressure and, when the home fly-half spilled the ball behind his own try line, ever alert flanker Ross Gifford pounced to score the opener.
This was shortly followed by a second when, after prop Scott Riach had broken down the centre of the field, neat handling and a smart loop saw fly-half Murdo Reid set his half back partner Jake Harrison away into the right hand corner.
With the pack dictating at the breakdown the Muntly backs were enjoying a bonanza of good clean ball and after several ground making phases, smart movement to the left gave winger Linton Muckle the opportunity to show the cover a clean pair of heels and register Muntly’s third try of the day.
Muntly closed the session with their fourth unanswered try, after a quick tap penalty and deft passing to second-row Charlie Anderson saw him burst through several tackles and race in from distance.
The familiar pattern of quick movement of the ball, facilitated by a solid forward foundation from the likes of front-rowers Rory Cameron, Thomas Eadon, and Alasdair Hutcheon, continued at the start of the second period and it was Anderson who benefitted to score once more after some neat interplay from Josh Austin and winger Ethan Mair.
Stornoway, in reply, issued a stark reminder that if Muntly let their concentration slip, they were ready to pounce when they opened their account; direct running and some lax Muntly tackling saw them surge over to score.
Stung back into action, Muntly created havoc in the Stornoway defence with some fast flowing attacking plays; scything breaks from fly-half Innes Parkin and centre Lewis Hay forced a Stornoway infringement deep in their own 22 and scrum-half George Lunn took advantage with a quick tap penalty and squirmed over from short range.
Whitecross was next to cross the whitewash when he benefited from some neat work from Parkin and Captain Gregor Clark to scamper over in the left hand corner.
The final session continued along the same lines.
With the Muntly locks and back-row of Callum Robson, Jenson Fathers, Lewie Austin, Roan Phillips and Clark in a particularly destructive mood, Stornoway were never given a moment’s peace at the breakdown and turnovers abounded.
From one such situation, Clark picked up from a dynamic Muntly counter-ruck and found a direct route to the Stornoway line from 30 metres.
The final score of the match summed up Muntly’s all-round superiority and show cased the high skill levels that they had demonstrated all game; A Stornoway scrum was taken against the head by Hutcheon, and with Parkin switching the point of attack and dumfounding the defence, Whitecross collected to dot down once more.
With Reid adding 5 conversions the final score of a very entertaining match was Muntly 32 – 3 Stornoway. This was a particularly competent performance from the entire young squad who demonstrated that through sound execution of the basics, fast flowing whole squad rugby is easily achievable.
