MUNTLY U14S BATTLE PAST A TOUGH DEESIDE OUTFIT TO MAINTAIN 100% RECORD
Wed 8th Nov 2017
This Sunday saw the return friendly match against a full U14 Deeside RFC Team at the sunny, cold and autumnal Huntly Pitches.

Early exchanges were fairly scrappy with both teams taking a while to warm up and get into any shape or rhythm. However Muntly were first to get on the score sheet.

From the middle of the field Prop Riach carried strongly into Deeside defences, the subsequent ruck was won and quick ball shipped nicely through the hands to Centre McBain to run a straight line at pace and score under the posts.

Muntly quickly added a second score, again through good forward pressure close to the Deeside line.

This time with Lock May picking up at the base of the ruck and powering over from 5 yards.

This seemed to wake Deeside up and they came back strongly in the remainder of the first period.

Good tackles from Wingers Mair and Muckle, Fullback Whitecross and Flanker Gifford keeping them at bay.

However Deeside did get the next score by moving the ball nicely through the hands firstly to right; then quickly recycling and attacking to the left.

Muntly eventually ran out of tacklers and the Deeside winger went over for a well-deserved try.

The first period ended two tries to one in Muntly’s favour.

The second period saw Muntly begin to play less as individuals and more as a Team; and subsequently begin to dominate possession and territory.

A series of forward drives involving Prop Cameron, Lock O’Brien and Hooker Austin, saw Muntly make good ground into the Deeside 22.

Quick service from Scrum Half Lunn and a nice switch from Stand-off Parkin, saw play held up just short of the Deeside try line.

Lunn sensing the defences in disarray picked up and dived over from short range to score.

The remainder of the second period saw Muntly dominate possession but they could not add to the score due to unfortunate handling errors and the tenacious tackling of the Deeside players.

The second period ended with Muntly leading by three tries to one; and the game still very much on.

In the third period, the Muntly players sought to offload the ball before taking contact, giving them greater fluency, and they finally hit their stride.

The first score of the period came from No8 Clark taking a tap penalty at pace and bursting several tackles to score under the posts.

Muntly quickly scored again following good recycling work from Flanker Lawson, another sniping run and offload from Lunn, allowing Centre Hay to outstrip the wide defences and run in under the posts.

The defensive pressure and much improved line speed from Muntly was taking its toll on Deeside now and they had several attempted clearing kicks either charged down or run straight back at them.

One such kick was caught beautifully by Mcbain on the 22; and he had enough pace to run it in for his second and Muntlys sixth try of the game.

The next try came from the forwards; a typically bullocking run by No 8 Clark, good support from Riach and Gifford, allowing O’Brien to eventually go over in the corner.

O’Brien wasn’t finished there as he added Muntlys eighth and final try diving over from close range following several rucks on the Deeside line.

With McBain adding six conversions this made the final score Muntly 30, Deeside 3.

This was another good performance from Muntly U14’s, growing into the match and finally putting it beyond doubt in the final period. Next up is a return to League business and a trip to Stornoway next weekend.

Muntly U14s: Rory Cameron, Josh Austin, Scott Riach, Euan May, Jai O’Brien, Arran Lawson, Ross Gifford, Gregor Clark( C), George Lunn, Innes Parkin, Mylo McBain, Lewis Hay, Ethan Mair, Linton Muckle, Fraser Whitecross.
