| ELEVENTH HEAVEN FOR MUNTLY U13/14 AS THEY SEE OFF CAITHNESS |

Muntly maintained a 100% Northern Conference record with a fine win over Caithness last Sunday.
Initial exchanges were scrappy with Muntly struggling to get the long journey north out of their system.
Caithness were enjoying a territorial advantage and the better of the possession when Muntly managed to break out and open the scoring.
An initial break by winger Mylo McBain saw Muntly gain ground out of their own 22 and, after finding centre Innes Parkin in support, the ball was moved wide to winger Roddy Manson who showed a clean pair of heels to the Caithness cover to score.
Once again being tested in defence, Muntly broke from their own 22 to double their lead; after regaining possession with smart counter-rucking from the pack, fly-half Euan Willetts exploited space on the blind side to race in from his own half.
Muntly were not having it all their own way however, and strong running from the Caithness pack, allied with Muntly indiscipline at the breakdown, saw a series of penalties conceded deep in Muntly territory.
The pressure eventually told when a quick tap at short range caught the Muntly defence flat footed and Caithness halved the deficit.
The period drew to a conclusion when a smart break by second-row Jai O’Brien saw the ball recycled and moved wide to McBain to sprint in for Muntly’s third try.
Caithness began the second period with renewed vigour and enjoyed a period of sustained pressure prior to the opening score.
Muntly No 8 Gregor Clark managed to rip the ball in a tackle in the Muntly 22 and good movement saw the ball find centre Lewis Hay on the right; with plenty still to do he evaded two Caithness tackles before racing down the right wing and arcing in under the posts to score from his own 22.
That feat was repeated when the Caithness restart saw them kick deep into the Muntly half, only for full-back Tom Letch to pick up, break several tackles and also race in.
Muntly ran riot for the remainder of the period and used their superior ball handling to good effect; firstly a sharp break to the right by scrum-half Jake Harrison put Muntly on the front foot and with territory gained deep into the Caithness 22, Clark picked up from the base of the ruck to dive over.
Straight from the restart Parkin set the ball moving left from deep and winger Fraser Whitecross was set clear on the half way line and had too much pace for the Caithness cover.
The final period started in a similar fashion; after good defensive pressure, especially from new back-rower Ross Gifford and HookerAlasdair Hutcheon, the ball was coughed up by Caithness.
Ever aware fly-half Murdo Reid set the backs moving into space on the left and centre Blair Garrick exploited the overlap perfectly and released winger Ethan Mair, who showed great pace to also run in from his own 22.
Previous bad habits and indiscipline returned to allow Caithness a score from another quick tap penalty before Clark’s deft offload to O’Briencentre-field, allowed the 2nd row to score on his return from injury.
Caithness refused to roll over however, and managed to pick up their 3rd try of the day when good movement to the left exploited a poorly organised Muntly defence.
Still enjoying the opportunity to move the ball at every opportunity, Muntly rounded off proceedings with 2 further scores; an incisive angle of running and outrageous dummy saw Reid cross to score and Clark picked up his second, and Muntly’s eleventh, of the afternoon when quickly recycled ball found him on the charge on the left to dot down.
With Parkin landing 8 conversions from 9 and Read and O’Brien also adding kicks, the final score was Muntly 43 – Caithness 12.
The match saw some real periods of quality play from the Muntlysquad; their handling throughout was of a high standard and their willingness to keep the ball alive, run support lines and pass before contact was the difference between the two sides.
It was testament to a true squad performance that ten different names graced a scoresheet showing 11 Muntly tries. Muntly now look to continue their unbeaten run when they travel to Orkney next weekend.
