MUNTLY U13/14 JUGGERNAUT ROLLS ON MAINTAINING 100% RECORD V STORNOWAY
Wed 13th Sep 2017
Muntly made it 3 wins from 3 with another convincing Northern Conference performance at home to Stornoway this Saturday, running out 36-7 winners.

Muntly set the tone for the day by opening their account straight from the Kick-off. With the kick well caught by 2nd-Row Charlie Anderson, who made inroads into the Stornoway half, a series of rucks and excellent interplay between Anderson and winger Fraser Whitecross allowed full-back Tom Letch to be set away to score the opener.

This was closely backed-up by a second score when, after well executed Muntly counter-rucking by No8 Gregor Clark, scrum-half George Lunn made a break down the short side.

The ball squirted out the side of the ensuing ruck and 2nd Row Euan May showed great awareness to claim the ball and sprint over in the corner.

Muntly showed no signs of easing off and added a further 4 tries before the first break.

High quality link play from prop Scott Riach and handling long the backs, and a superbly weighted pass from Murdo Reid, set Whitecross away to score.

Another break down the left hand side saw Euan May run in for his second and fine work up the centre from Anderson and Fly-half Euan Willetts, allowed centre Lewis Hay to pick up at the base of a ruck and go over from short range.

The period ended with a fine solo effort from Clark; with Stornoway enjoying rare possession, Clark’s cover tackle on the isolated Stornoway winger shut down the attack and saw him gain his feet, claim the ball and then outstrip the defence to run in from fully 65 metres.

Stornoway fared much better in the second period, clearly having managed to get their long journey out of their system.

Early exchanges were tight with both defences holding firm and, but for excellent tackling from Reid, winger Roddy Manson and flanker Nathan Ruck, Muntly would have found their lead significantly dented.

Eventually Stornoway pressure told and after several phases of play they managed to engineer extra numbers on the right flank to score.

Good work from centre Mostyn Findlater and winger Ethan Mair almost saw Muntly reply in kind, however, the Stornoway defence held firm.

Stornoway finished the session on a high, when, having broken through several lax Muntly tackles, their sharp centre broke away to score, much to the delight of the entire visiting contingent.

Normal service was resumed for the final session, with Muntly once again scoring direct from the re-start.

Flanker Corey Rizza safely pouched the kick and offloaded to Clark who found a gap to sprint in under the posts.

Even when in possession, Stornoway were under the cosh; trying to escape from their own try-line, Muntly pressure managed to secure a turnover and hooker Josh Austin gathered and dived over for the score.

The final two tries of the day saw the Muntly backs cut loose with some incisive running and slick handling.

Firstly, from a scrum on the half way line, simple passing set the fleet-footed winger Mylo McBain away on the left and he out-paced the cover to run in.

Shortly after, excellent work from the pack saw a scrum win against the head; grateful for quick, clean ball the backs took advantage and a beautifully delayed pass from Blair Garrick set McBain away to score once more. 6 conversions were added by Willetts and Innes Parkin to give a final score of 36-7.

This was a solid Muntly performance with many newer and younger players getting extended periods of game time, with all learning plenty to take forward; every one of them stepped up to the mark and performed exceptionally well.

Muntly U13/14 strength in depth is clear to see and competition for starting places is fierce, which greatly pleases the coaches.

The future for this and next season look bright!
