MORAY S1/2 7 - 9 HIGHLAND 02-02-14
Thu 13th Feb 2014
A tight game resulted in a narrow victory for Highland 7-9. This was the return leg in back to back fixtures against the side from Inverness.

Moray may feel a bit unlucky at the eventual result, as they were playing their first game of 2014, and while the sun shined, initially it showed as the action appeared to be very similar to match back in December with Highland holding the upper hand in terms of territory, and they used this to their advantage with early pressure in the Moray 5 metre area, which led to a scoring try, with a dive just over the try line, but the resulting conversion was missed.

Both sides competed well up to the first interval, but with no further scores.

On a heavy pitch Moray came good in the second period with growing pressure and two burst through tries scored by flanker Ryan Robertshaw, a skill which he attempted to perform, without reward in the last fixture, but proved to be successful on this occasion.

Again, Highland scored a single unconverted try. Leaving Moray ahead at the end of the second period, 7-6.

Moray’s tackling was good from all, but contact took it’s toll with two players substituted due to contact injuries and a third ending the game feeling his jaw!!

The red and white hoops dominated up front in a large majority of the game. George Hurst had a good game at scrum half and was all over the park making some cracking tackles, and the forwards rucking improved as the game went on but we seemed to lack intensity at times.

Despite all of this, the third period was very close, and once Highland scored their third unconverted try, Moray were forced to take the game to the Inverness side and it could have gone either way right up to the last 10mins or so but no further scores, meant that the final score Moray 7 Highland 9.

It was clear that this had been a good hard match, as Highland were very relieved at the end!

Moray may have deserved to win the game, with Ewan Ball in the back row and Murdo as a flanker, being aggressive ball carriers, and Daniel Cotton who is attempting to make the full back spot his own and he can read the game well in that position , but Moray continue to be the ‘nearly side’.

The players must thank those coaches who supported them; Tim Hurst, Nick Robertshaw and Damion Walker, all those who helped with the post match catering and Graham Millar who helped with cleaning up, even in the changing rooms! Paul Wood for officiating and Highland RFC for again bringing competitive opposition.

So, the Moray S1/2 squad have two weeks training before their next fixture at Morriston against Gairoch on 23rd February.
