MORAY S1/2 11 – 16 GORDONSTOUN |
Thu 5th Dec 2013 |
Following Moray’s win last week, some of the team were intentionally rested ahead of the final two fixtures of the year, meaning that some of the younger/less experienced players were given a starting position.
This included Gregor Cranmer being given a first run out at loose head and Nathan Bradley being given the captaincy as he is leaving the area and so ending his links with the Club.
Whilst Moray were missing some of their more experienced players, they did manage to scrummage well.
It was the visitor’s backs, however, who started confidently and scored two converted tries without reply in the first fifteen minutes, thanks to strong left wing play, thus ending the first period at 0-8.
The home team needed to respond, and after the interval they came back with three tries in the second period through Josh Chapman and a Daniel Cotton brace after good overlapping right wing support and a good turn of pace.
Rory Millar kicked two out of three conversions, which helped to turn the tide in Moray’s favour at 11-8.
Although the Elgin side were winning good ball through the forwards and were moving the ball to the wings well, it was the Gordonstoun side that retook the lead.
A try was scored under the posts and the conversion gave them a single point lead at 11-12 at the end of second period.
Moray again made more substitutions but it was Gordonstoun who regained the ascendency during the third period and clinched the victory with their fourth and final try.
The conversion points were added from in front of the posts, giving them a well-earned 11-16 victory.
It had been a good match which had been evenly contested. Even though there were a number of changes to the Moray side, there were signs that the team is developing well as a squad and becoming more cohesive.
Well done to Gordonstoun who responded positively after a strong start to the second period by the home side.
The two sides have their third and final meeting in late spring and it is sure to be another cracker and Moray will be looking to turn the tables.
This Saturday, there is a Moray Rugby home double header against Ross Sutherland. At 12 noon, the S1/2 team play the Invergordon based S1/S2 side and at 2pm, Moray 1st XV play Ross Sutherland 1st XV in an RBS Caledonia League Division 2 North fixture.
