MORAY U18 V GORDONSTON U18 -18/11/12
Tue 20th Nov 2012
Moray u18’s continued their league program with a fixture away to Gordonston.

The local rivals from Duffus were in fine form after winning the Brewin Dolphin Regional Plate and put on a strong performance to beat Moray 38 points to 3.

Gordonston kicked off and Moray took the game to them early on winning a scrum against the head which let scrum half Matty Smith break into upfield.

It was the home team however who opened the scoring when they converted a penalty for offside from 30 m.

They continued to apply the pressure and from another tap penalty drove over the Moray line but were denied a try with scrum half Smith getting his body under the ball.

Both teams were keen to move the ball around and the first 20 minutes were evenly matched before Gordonston got their first try when they sucked in the Moray defence with 3 rucks before driving over in the corner to make it 8-0.

Moray responded well and from a scrum on their 10 m line the backs executed a well rehearsed move which saw full back Ewan Stuart burst into the line and take the ball all the way to the Gordonston 5 m line before he was tackled, losing possession and the ball was cleared for a lineout.

Moray continued to probe the home team’s defences with good breaks from Jordan Watters and Josh Valentine playing in unaccustomed roles in the back row.

There were also big tackles going in from Joe Vickery and Lewis Macdonald when the Moray lads had to defend.

Moray went down to 14 men after 30 minutes when they lost Aaron Logan for an adjudged shoulder charge and Gordonston kicked the resultant penalty to make it 11-0.

They then took advantage of their extra man to stretch the Moray defence and add a converted try just before half time to make it 18-0.

Moray had a couple of penalty attempts from 30 m at the end of the half but were unable to land them and get on the score sheet.

The second half began with Gordonston on the attack and they broke from a scrum in midfield to take the ball up to the Moray 5 m line before rucking and going over in the corner to make it 23-0.

They followed it up with another try after 50 minutes when the bounce of the ball eluded the Moray defence and Gordonston gained possession, spun the ball wide and touched down in the corner to make it 28 – 0

Moray didn’t let their heads go down and fought their way up to the Gordonston 22 before winning a penalty for offside which was converted by Lewis Macdonald.

After 55 minutes Gordonston stretched their lead further with an unconverted try in the corner after some great build up play.

They were now in full flow and the Moray team were scrambling to keep them out. Another attacking move was stopped 5 m short of the line when centre Josh Grundie put in a try saving tackle and full back Stuart ripped the ball free and burst up to half way before being caught.

Gordonston finished the afternoon with a final try when former Moray player Alan Hunte found a gap and sprinted through before being hauled down short of the line. Gordonston won the ruck and moved the ball at pace across the park to let their winger cross in the opposite corner.

This was another tough outing for Moray against a well organised and in form team. The pack was missing a few regulars and in spite of this performed well in the scrum and the back row put in a huge effort in defence as well as asking questions of Gordonston in attack. MacDonald and Stuart in the backs always looked a threat when running from deep.

The Moray lads need to keep working on the training pitch and the positive results they are after will come.
