| MORAY U16 V CAITHNESS - 11TH SEPT 2011 |

 Moray U16’s made the long trip up to Caithness on Sunday for their 3rd league match of the season.
Caithness kicked off into a blustery wind after Moray captain Kieran Falconer won the toss and Moray were immediately on the attack and moved the ball to the wing. The initial break by the backs was followed up by a series of rucks and prop Niall Ward finished off the move by driving over in the corner to open the score.
 Moray continued to pressurise Caithness and their scrum overturned a Caithness put in and the ball was quickly moved along the back line with full back Kieran Young coming into the line and going over for a second try. This time Ewan Stuart was able to convert to make the score 12-0 to Moray.
Caithness were coming back into the game and were rucking well but were unable to penetrate the Moray defence when they won the ball. Moray again attacked and won a line out on the Caithness 5m line. The forwards won the line out and set up a drive. The second phase resulted in Alex Ward driving over from short range for his 1st try for the club. Ewan Stuart added the conversion.
 Caithness rallied and put Moray under pressure in their own 22. The Moray defence were up to the task and held out well before Caithness were penalised and Moray were able to clear their lines with a long touch finder from Duncan Steven.
Just before half time Moray were again on the attack and a series of drives up the pitch involving forwards and backs set up a ruck on the right. With the defence stretched Moray moved the ball wide left and flanker Ewan Stuart was on hand to go over and score.

 The second half started with Moray changing scrum half’s – Matty Smith coming off after a knock received at the end of the first half and David Burns took over. Stephen Hughes soon joined him replacing Kieran Elcock in the second row and Jack Blom came on shortly after to replace Alistair Couttie.
Moray kicked of the second half into the wind and Caithness responded to their half time talk with an attack through the forwards deep into the visitors 22. Moray managed to win the ball back in a ruck and ran it out form their 22 through the backs. After a ruck in the Caithness half Moray moved the ball wide to Toby Jefferies ran wide and then scored near the posts to make a tricky conversion into the wind easier for Ewan Stuart.
 Moray were now in full flow and again put Caithness under sustained pressure. From a scrum in the Caithness 22 the home team kicked the ball clear and it was caught by Moray full back Kieran Young and a ruck was set up mid field. From the ruck Moray moved the ball along the back line and Toby Jefferies went over for his second try out wide on the left
Caithness continued to play a big part in the game and refused to give up to their credit. They made some headway into the Moray half and from a lineout tried to move the ball through their backs. The Moray centres Josh Valentine and Josh Grundie were quick to put them under pressure and hacked a dropped ball up the field. Josh Grundie following up collected the ball and went over for a try.
Caithness came back at Moray again and put a high kick into the Moray 22 which was scrambled into touch. From the lineout the Caithness pack set up a drive and finally got a try for their afternoon’s efforts.
Moray finished the game in the Caithness half and despite a couple of good handling moves and penetrating runs up the wing by Kieran Rodgers, were unable to add to the score ending the game with a win by 41 points to 5.
 This was another great team effort from Moray. The pack performed well in the scrum with the front row of Niall Ward, Lewis Scott and Aaron Logan putting Caithness under pressure. The whole team was comfortable running with the ball in hand and using offloads to great effect.
The next couple of games against Highland and Orkney will provide a stern test and allow the team to see how far they have come so far this season.
There is plenty to work on at training but the team are showing great spirit and playing very entertaining rugby.
