ROSS SUTHERLAND V MORAY U16 - 28.8.11
Mon 29th Aug 2011
Moray U16’s opened their league campaign with a trip to Ross Sutherland on Sunday.

After leaving Elgin in atrocious weather it was good to arrive in Invergordon and find it was only drizzling.

The game kicked off with a big Ross Sutherland team pressurising Moray and they made a few short drive s into the Moray 22. Moray won the ball from a scrum after a knock on and moved it through the backs to Toby Jefferies on the wing. He evaded a couple of tackles and scored in the corner.

The conversion was missed but from the restart by Ross, Moray gathered the ball and the forwards made ground through offloads and drives of rucks. Once into the Ross 22 the ball was moved wide through the backs and Alan Hunte cut inside to score. Ewan Stuart kicked the conversion to make the score 12-0 after 15 minutes.

Ross Sutherland came right back at Moray after this and their big forwards were winning the scrum encounters. They drove the ball into Moray’s 22 and after successive forward drives they went over for a try under the posts. The conversion was kicked to make the score 12-7.

Both sides were competing fiercely for the ball and it was shortly before half time before Moray scored again by offloading and moving the ball through the backs to Toby Jefferies who ran in for an unconverted try.

Half time Ross Sutherland 7 Moray 17.

The second half kicked off with Moray using their subs to give everyone a run out at the start of the season. The team settled quickly and broke form a ruck near halfway. Good support from the forwards meant that Lewis Scott received the ball 30 m from the line but was able to waltz past 3 tacklers and score near the posts. Ewan Stuart converted to make it 24-7.

The Moray scrum was performing better this half and regularly taking the ball against the put in. The lineout was also performing well. Moray were threatening from all areas once they had won the ball but Ross Sutherland never gave up and were rucking competitively, however Moray’s fitness began to tell as the half progressed.

From a tap free kick in at the Moray 10 m line they drove upfield and after several offloads and rucks the ball was moved through the backs to Alan Hunte who went over for his second try in the corner picking up an injury on a large stone at the same time.

Moray were in full flow now and moving the ball well. From a ruck in the Ross 22 they got the ball through the backs to Kierna Rodgers who went over out wide to score. Ewan Stuart kicked a tremendous conversion to make the score 36-7. Moray continued to pile on the pressure and from a scrum in the Ross 22 Josh Valentine at centre sidestepped the Ross centre to score near the posts. Ewan Stuart converted to make the final score 43-7 to Moray.

This was a good opening to the season for Moray with everyone contributing to a good win. The hard work in training on fitness and handling paid off. There are plenty of things the team can work on to improve but they should be proud of their efforts.
