MORAY U16 V STORNOWAY – CALLY CUP PRE ROUND
Wed 2nd Feb 2011
The U16 team returned to Stornoway for the 2nd time this season to play them in the Cally cup.

The relatively smooth crossing meant that we arrived on the island in good shape only to be met by Hamish Macbeth and the Stornoway drug squad sniffer dog. The team passed the dope test and made their way to the hostel followed by the local bobbies who were obviously in cahoots with the Stornoway team and made sure we knew how big the islanders team was.

The team were totally focussed for this game and having learnt the lessons from their last visit were tucked up in bed at a sensible hour.

Saturday dawned with perfect conditions for rugby and Moray started the game in a positive mood and soon had the Stornoway team under pressure.

Lewis Scott was unlucky not to get a try after charging down a clearance kick and being adjudged to have lost the race to touch down.

Moray continued the pressure with a series of drives, lineouts and scrums but were unable to cross the line with some desperate defence from the home team.

It was 15 minutes before Stornoway managed to get out of their own half and briefly enjoyed some respite.

Moray’s defence was in good form and after 25 minutes they were on the attack again with the forwards winning good ball in the middle of the park and the backs moving it to Josh Grundle on the wing. He broke through 2 tackles and touched down out wide. Moray continued to attack but at half time the score was 0-5.

The second half opened with Moray kicking off and turning over the ball from a ruck. The forwards drove the ball right up to the try line with a series of rucks and Ian Simpson powered over from short range to score. Euan Stuart converted to make the score 0-12.

Stornoway were not about to give up and put Moray under pressure. However Moray were committed in defence and broke out on several occasions to relieve the pressure. Gareth Dunscombe was noticeable in his aggressive driving and had one superb run from the Moray 22 to nearly half way.

Trevor Jones was also creating problems for the home side and was rewarded with a try after several good breaks. Moray won the ball in Stornoway’s 22 and Trevor broke several tackles to make the score 17-0 to Moray.

The pressure and Moray’s fitness was beginning to tell and Stornoway were resorting to clearance kicks form their 22 to try and break out. Kieran Young at full back was well positioned to take advantage and attacked with a great sidestep and long pass to Josh Grundle who raced clear to score. 22-0 to Moray.

Moray continued to look for tries and another clearance kick form Stornoway was gathered by Kieran Young before being kicked over the Stornoway defence by Josh Grundle. The race to touch down resulted in another try for Moray with both Josh and Trevor claiming it!

Stornoway were not going to give up and came back at Moray but stout defence held them out until the final whistle. Final score was 27-0 to Moray

This was an excellent performance with a small squad of 17 players showing total commitment and even with many playing out of position they still turned in a fine display both in attack and defence. The next round sees a home match v Highland in 2 weeks time.
