GORDONSTOUN V MORAY U16 (05/09/10)
Fri 24th Sep 2010
GORDONSTOUN V MORAY U16 (05/09/10)Moray U16 kicked off the season away to Gordonstoun with a new look team based on the successful squad from last season plus some new additions from S3 and some new arrivals to the squad. This has made competition for places intense and upped the commitment being shown by everyone in the squad.

Gordonstoun kicked off and quickly had Moray under pressure following a knock on from Moray. From the resulting scrum the ball came to Gordonstoun’s fly half who drifted through the Moray defence to open the scoring. The try was converted to give Gordonstoun an early 7-0 lead.

Moray came back into the game and both sides were contesting for the ball fiercely in tackles and rucks. Moray won a scrum in their own 22 and quickly moved the ball through the back line to winger Josh Grundle who took off up the pitch and ran in a try from the half way line. The conversion from out wide was missed to leave the score 7-5.

Moray were now moving the ball around with much more confidence and from a kick ahead by Ewan Stuart, Kieran Cowie sped onto the loose ball and ran in a try under the posts. Ewan Stuart converted to make the score 7-12.

Moray were now beginning to dominate in the forwards and win some excellent ball. The forwards drove the ball into the Gordonstoun 22 and Craig Routledge powered over from 5m to make the score 5-17 at half time.

The second half opened with Gordonstoun applying pressure and threatening Moray’s line. However the ball was turned over and Moray moved it through the backs in their own 22. Ewan Stuart got the ball out wide and sprinted up the pitch from half way to score under the posts. The conversion was also kicked by Ewan Stuart. Score 5-24.

Gordonstoun were not out of the game yet and showed character by sticking to their task and running the ball at Moray through the forwards. This resulted in 2 tries being scored to bring them within a converted try of Moray.

The last 10 minutes was intense rugby with both sides threatening to score but being unable to break stout defences.

Final result was a win for Moray 24-17.

Credit goes to all the squad for a great opening display with committed tackling and rucking in the forwards and some slick handling and running from the backs.
Next week’s opponents Highland will provide a stern test for Moray but if the same level of performance is achieved then it will be a close game
