Last Saturday, despite a number of players away on a school trip, Moray U18s travelled to Banff with 14 players and entered two sides in the pool stages of the sevens.
Given that all players had to play all the matches, Moray A progressed through the pool stage winning all their matches with some good open sevens rugby combined with aggressive contact skills. This included beating Deeside who clearly felt they were there to win the day, relegating them to second place in the pool and to the Plate play off, with Moray going in to the Cup final.
In the other pool, the B side, despite an early loss to Ellon, won their remaining games to go through to the Plate final.
With both finals being played at the same time, it was clear that the Moray lads, having completed every match without a break, were almost out on their feet. In the Cup final, Moray were ahead 19-17, but when Ellon scored against the run of play, Moray were not able to lift themselves again, with Ellon going on to win the Cup.
The Plate final went the same way, with the Moray players not able to respond in the last match of the day, however it was a very good performance from every one of the 14 lads who travelled, including three of the U16s, to reach both finals and play some of the best sevens rugby on the day.
