MORAY 8 ABERDEEN GRAMMAR 2ND XV 36 |
Thu 27th Feb 2020 |
A plucky and spirited performance by an inexperienced Moray side saw them eventually lose by 36 points to 8 against a strong Aberdeen Grammar Rugby 2nd XV, in a Tennents Caledonia North Region League Division 2 fixture in Elgin last Saturday.
With a number of first team regulars unavailable, an inexperienced Moray side start the game brightly and take the game to their opponents.
In the 13th minute, they moved 3-0 ahead when Rory Millar landed a penalty following a ‘hands in the ruck’ offence in the 22.
The home side continued to have the bulk of the play and pressure paid off in the 28th minute when they stretched the lead.
A ‘squint feed’ at a scrum earned the Elgin side a penalty.
A quick tap was taken by Lewis Scott and he drove for the line only to be stopped a metre short. Chris Robottom was on hand, picked and drove over for the score.
Millar did not manage to add the conversion in the strong wind, leaving the score at 8-0.
In the 37th minute, a penalty to Grammar was pushed into touch, 8 metres out.
The line was taken, driven and then opened to the backs to run in a converted try for 8-7.
In the final play of the half, a mishandle by a Moray player allowed the visitors to gain ball and drive for the line out wide.
Defence stood strong but players were pulled in and when the ball was moved wide a second converted try was scored for a half-time lead at 8-14.
It had been a late double blow for the Elgin side who had the bulk of the ball in the first half.
With the wind at their backs, the Aberdeen side applied early pressure in the home half.
A penalty was conceded in the 22 and an unconverted try was scored, for 8-19, following a quick tap.
The visitors were using the wind well and pushing Moray back into their own half and in the 53rd minute they stretched the lead to 8-26.
In the 58th minute, the Elgin had a good chance to narrow the lead but were held up over the line before losing the ball in the next phase.
Moray pressed but Grammar turned defence into attack and in the 62nd minute scored another unconverted try for 8-31.
The Aberdeen side completed their scoring by adding an unconverted try in the 71st minute.
In the final minutes, the Elgin side pushed hard in the visitor’s half and did make the line but unfortunately the referee was blindside.
Moray had worked hard all afternoon and the result flattered as it had been more of a contest than the score-line suggests.
This Saturday, Moray are at home to North Police Scotland.
