GARIOCH 35 MORAY 1ST XV 12 |
Wed 24th Oct 2018 |
Moray 1st XV were beaten by 35 points to 12 on the road last weekend when they took on Garioch in a Tennent’s Caledonia North 2 fixture.
The early encounters saw the Elgin team win plenty ball but not make much headway into the breeze through some robust tackling by their opponents.
In the 5th minute, however, it was the Garioch side who took they lead following a fortuitous break at a line-out.
The ball was overthrown at the line on the half-way and the very kind bounce took the ball into the arms of the outside-centre who was coming at speed. He broke the first line of defence and had a straight run under the posts for a converted try and 7-0.
The Inverurie side tried to capitalise on this early break with a period of pressure in the 22 but the Moray side defended well and cleared the danger.
In the 17th minute, a handling move by the visitors took them deep into the 22 to an attacking line.
Clean ball was taken, a drive ensued and after a number of phases, second-row James Angus burst over the line to score.
Stand-off Rory Millar narrowly missed the kick from the touch-line to leave the score at 7-5.
Seven minutes later, Garioch extended the lead. A penalty took them to 10 metres out and following a clean line, the ball was spun wide and a couple of handling phases later they went over under the posts for a second converted try and a 14-5 lead.
In the 33rd minute, the Inverurie side added a third. The Elgin side had been pressing in the 22 but gave away a penalty which was kicked to touch around the 10 metre line.
Ball ‘off the top’ was moved wide and the dangerous outside-centre broke the first-up tackle and got behind the defence. With only the full-back to beat, he passed the ball to the supporting inside-centre who made the line.
The try was converted for a half-time score of Garioch 21 Moray 5.
Moray started the second half brightly and applied a lot of pressure in the home 22 but some good defence and some inaccuracies meant they were not able to close the gap.
In the 55th minute, very much against the run of play, and with their first venture into the opposition half, Garioch stretched their lead.
The try emanated from their own half where the outside-centre broke a soft tackle and in contact with the last line of defence, offloaded for a converted try to be scored for 28-5.
This was a big setback for the Elgin side as they had been the dominant force in relation to territory so far in the second half but they buckled down and got back to the offensive.
Further opportunities were created but not taken and in the 70th minute, in virtually their second foray of the half into opposition territory, the Inverurie side again broke some first up tackling and made the line to extend their lead to 35-5.
The spirited Moray side returned to the offensive and after a number of attacking phases in the home 22, scored the final points of the afternoon.
No 8 James Shooter picked up at the base of an attacking scrum, went blind and brushed off a couple of defenders before making the line. Millar added the conversion points for a final score of Garioch 35 Moray 12.
The final score-line had somewhat flattered the Garioch side as Moray had very much contributed to the game, had put in a great shift and there was a lot of good things about their performance.
A very good Garioch outside-centre had been the main contributor to his side’s success, causing issues every time he had the ball, scoring one and setting up three with some hard running that the visitor’s defence had difficulty in coping with.
This Saturday, Moray 1st XV are at home on league business to Banff. Moray 2nd XV are also at home this weekend when they play Deeside in a Tennent’s Caledonia North 4 fixture. Both matches kick-off at 3pm.
