MORAY 2ND XV 18 PETERHEAD 14 |
Tue 27th Mar 2018 |
Moray 2nd XV welcomed Peterhead to Morriston last Saturday for their latest BT Caledonia League Division 3 North fixture and after a hard-fought encounter, they came from behind to prevail at 18 points to 14.
It was the visitors who took the lead after only 3 minutes. Clean ball, from a scrum on the half-way, was quickly moved to the backs and the full-back had the pace to go outside the defence and then step back inside to score a converted try under the posts for a 0-7 lead.
The home side played their way into the game with some strong running and had a couple of decent chances but the Peterhead defence stood strong.
In the 36th minute, however, Moray got themselves on the board. A penalty was given for hands in a ruck, 10 metres out and Stand-off Chris Clarke stepped up and landed the kick for 3-7.
A yellow card gave the visitors the numerical advantage for the last few minutes of the half and on the 40-minute mark, a series of phases took them into the 22 before being halted. Quick ball was moved and the stand-off stepped inside and made the line for a second converted try and a 3-14 half-time score.
Moray made some changes at the break and started the second half brightly. They made good ground through strong running by both forwards and backs and had a couple of chances to add to their tally but sound defence and some inaccuracies meant they could not close the gap. In the 64th minute, however, they did reduce the lead. After several drives for the line, the ball was spun through hands to wing Sinclair MacLeod who had enough room to score an unconverted try for 8-14.
With the Peterhead side visibly tiring, the Elgin side pressed for the winning score. The visitors continued to defend stoutly but in the 78th minute, ball was opened from a solid scrum in the 22 and centre Connor McWilliam came at pace on the angle, broke the tackle and scored under the posts. Clarke added the conversion for the lead at 15-14.
Moray regained the ball from the kick-off and a number of driving phases took them back into the 22 where they were awarded a penalty for in at the side of a ruck. Clarke landed this last kick of the game for a final score of Moray 2nds 18 Peterhead 14.
It had been a good all-round display by the Moray side who had played with good intensity and pace and had done really well to come back from a two try deficit to win.
There is no fixture for the Moray 2nd XV this weekend but they are back at home on the 7th April against Huntly, kick-off 3pm.
