MORAY 64 DEESIDE 5 |
Wed 17th Jan 2018 |
Last Saturday, after having not played a fixture in BT Caledonia League Division 2 North for six weeks, Moray 1st XV comprehensively defeated Deeside by 64 points to nil at Gordonstoun as Morriston was deemed unplayable due to frost.
After only 5 minutes, the Elgin side took the lead.
A flowing move by the backs saw full-back Callum Wright knock on in the process of scoring.
A defensive scrum 5 was given which was taken against the head, driven and set.
Second-row David Clarke picked up at the base of the ruck and drove over to score.
Wright added the conversion for 7-0.
The home side had the upper hand in the early encounters and in the 12th minute, they stretched the lead when No 8 John Stuart broke from a ruck and good hands through the backs saw wing Lewis Scott score an unconverted try out wide for 12-0.
In the 19th minute, Moray progressed to an attacking scrum, 5 metres out.
Clean ball was hooked and a drive set up which took them to the line where Stuart picked and scored.
Wright converted for 19-0.
The bonus point score came 2 minutes later and emanated from within their own half.
Stuart gathered ball on his own 10 metre line and went on a rampaging run, brushing aside tacklers and only came to a halt when he lost his footing 10 metres from the line.
To his credit, he was still able to offload to supporting prop Steven Reid who in turn moved the ball wide to wing Keiran Young who scored an unconverted try out wide for 24-0.
In the 32nd minute, the Elgin side scored another try which started inside their own half.
This time centre Cameron Renton made the break and in contact offloaded to scrum-half Callum Watson who shifted the ball to Young to round his opposite number and score under the posts.
Wright added the extras for 31-0.
In the final play of the first half, the score extended to 36-0 when Wright scored an unconverted try after a good handling move by the backs.
Deeside started the second half brightly and had their best spell of the match but the home defence stood strong.
In the 52nd minute, with the visitors attacking in the 22, ball was turned over and Wright broke to the opposition 22 before offloading to supporting wing-forward Neil Wiseman who ran the score in under the posts. Wright converted for 43-0.
Six minutes later, it was 50-0 when Scott scored his second converted try after good work by Renton and hooker Marc Higgins.
In the 69th minute, Deeside scored an unconverted consolation try for 50-5 after taking a quick tap penalty in the home 22.
In the last two minutes of the contest, Moray scored two final converted tries.
The first was scored by prop Nathan Gilmore after a quick tap penalty and a couple of passes in the 22 and the second by Scott who scored his third of the afternoon after receiving the ball from second-row Connor Duncan who had made a great break from within his own half.
Both were converted by Wright for a final tally of 64 points to 5.
Although there had been no league business for 6 weeks, the Moray side did not show any rustiness in dominating the fixture in all areas and running in ten tries.
This Saturday (tomorrow), Moray 1st XV are away to Aberdeen to play Grammar 2nds in the league.
