MORAY 2ND XV 60 DYCE 0 |
Wed 20th Sep 2017 |
Moray 2nd XV comprehensively defeated Dyce by 60 points to nil at Morriston on Saturday, in their latest BT Caledonia League Division 3 North league fixture to make it two wins out of three.
The Elgin side kicked off and quickly put pressure on the visitors in their own half. Several drives at the line ended with a penalty for hands on the deck. A quick tap was taken and a couple of passes later, wing-forward Tom Reynolds broke the defence and scored. Stand-off Richard Lewis added the conversion points for a 7-0 lead.
In the 20th minute, the Aberdeen side were caught offside, 20 metres out, and Lewis duly landed the kick to stretch the lead to 10-0.
The home side were in control at this early stage and their scrum was proving too strong for their opponents and a great source of good ball.
In the 24th minute, Moray moved further ahead. A passage of play took them into the opposition 22 but a knock-on handed Dyce a defending scrum. The power of the attacking scrum produced the ball and after one ruck, captain and second-row Matthew Lackie received the ball on the crash, broke through the defence and scored an unconverted try for 15-0.
The Elgin side scored the final points of the half when in the 39th minute they turned over ball on the halfway line and quickly moved the ball wide to centre Lewis Scott who beat his opposite number and made the line. Lewis hit the upright with his conversion attempt leaving the halftime score at Moray 2nd XV 20 Dyce 0.
Dyce started the second half brightly but the home defence stood strong and coped admirably.
The home side regained the initiative and in the 55th minute stretched the lead. The Aberdeen side had another scrum on their 5 metre line and again were driven backwards and the ball taken against the head. Replacement No 8 James Angus picked up and bludgeoned his way over the line for a try, the bonus point try. Lewis converted for 27-0.
Moray produced another couple of good chances in the next 10 minutes or so but could not convert the opportunities. In the 68th minute, however, they moved further ahead. The dominant forwards again took ball against the head at a scrum in the opposition 22 and this time, scrum-half Rupert Holt broke blind and scored and with Lewis converting, the score was now 34-0.
To rub salt into the wound, the Elgin side added a further four tries in the last eight minutes of the game.
Firstly, Scott scored an unconverted try out wide after a good flowing move by the backs.
Secondly, centre Sinclair McLeod made it under the posts for a converted try after he was put in space in the middle of the park.
Next a superb reverse pass by Holt opened the way for wing-forward Joe McColl to score an unconverted try under the posts.
Lastly, in the final minute, Scott broke from inside his own half, beating his opposite number and then had the pace to make the line for his third try of the afternoon. Lewis converted to take the final score to Moray 2nd XV 60 Dyce 0.
It had been an excellent all round performance from the Moray team. Up front, the scrummage had been immense and completely dominated. Behind them, the backs thrived on the amount of ball presented and always posed a threat, scoring some good tries with 'man of the match' Lewis Scott picking up three.
This Saturday the team are again on league business away to Aberdeenshire 2nds.
