MUNTLY U13/14 V ELGIN
Wed 15th Mar 2017
Muntly U13/14 combined Team Win against Ross Sutherland in hard fought encounter at Elgin.

On a glorious day for rugby, Ross Sutherland U14’s were the visitors to the Morriston pitches Elgin, on Sunday; and right from the off Muntly knew they were in for a very competitive game.

Ross Sutherland gathered the kick off and returned it with interest into the Muntly defences. Good recycled ball from the Ross Sutherland forwards and crisp passing from their half backs allowed their big centre the opportunity to run hard at Muntly. Muntly’s tackling was poor and the Ross Sutherland centre was in under the posts for the first try of the day.

Muntly needed to wake up and switch on and proceeded to do so in the next 5 minutes.

The Muntly forwards began to win ball at the break down and through the ball carrying of Logie, Wilson and Calam in particular they made good ground into the visitors 22. Scrum half Lunn was now getting some ball and Parkin at stand- off was able to supply a short inside pass for Wilson to burst clear of the Ross Sutherland defences and score under the posts. The first period ended all square.

In the second period and playing down the slope Muntly really took the game to the visitors and built a healthy lead.

A nice line break by Centre Willets and pass to Andrew made good ground into the visitors half. Ball was recycled and a good charge by Logie set up a ruck close to the visitors try line. Wing Forward Rodwell picked up from the base of the ruck and dived over for Muntly’s second try.

Muntly’s third try resulted from solid Muntly defence around half way, where Wing Forward Price ripped the ball from Ross Sutherland and fed the backs. The ball was shipped wide and winger Falcus dashed in from distance for a good score.

Muntly’s next score was almost a carbon copy, except that this time, Price having ripped the ball from Ross Sutherlands possession, ran it in himself to score under the posts.

Muntly’s next try was hailed as “try of the season” from the watching crowd and was indeed the result of some great heads-up rugby.

A forward burst by Riach, quick ruck-ball fed to the on-rushing Wilson, who offloaded nicely to Price, who passed to Parkin, who fed Falcus to run in for a lovely Team score.

With the score now 5 tries to 1 in Muntly’s favour, they perhaps thought the job was done. However Ross Sutherland thought otherwise and scored a good team try of their own.

Following several good rucks and recycling of ball, their pacey centre scored just wide of the Muntly posts.

Muntly then scored the final try of the second period following good work at the breakdown by Clark, Wilson fed Full back Whitecross, who showed nice footwork to cut inside the defences and score. The second period ended 6 tries to 2 for Muntly.

Muntly had the luxury of bringing on 12 fresh players at half time – almost a whole new Team – allowing all 27 squad players to get game time.

The third period was a tight combative affair with forwards O’Brien, Oakes and Young showing up well in the loose.

Despite having good possession on a number of occasions Muntly gave away several needless penalties for infringements at the ruck which disrupted their play.

Ross Sutherland were next to get on the wrong side of the referee and following a series of high tackles, they had their Wing Forward Yellow carded and sent to the sin-bin. Perhaps a feeling of injustice fuelled the Ross Sutherland Team, as they upped their intensity and eventually broke through the Muntly defence to score a try from their big Full Back. The third period ended 6 tries to 3 to Muntly.

The fourth period started with Ross Sutherland in the ascendency and had it not been for good tackles from winger Manson and Hooker Austin, they would have scored.

However Muntly were first to score in the final period.

Good hands from Andrew and Hay, releasing Wilson to rampage in under the posts for the try.

Once again good ball carries by Young and May into the now tiring Ross Sutherland defences allowed scrum half Stuart time to pick out a nice pass to Price, who dived over the try line to score Muntly’s eighth and final try.

This was a good spirited Ross Sutherland side and they deservedly scored the final try of the game. Their forwards won good line out possession in the Muntly 22 and with quick hands the ball was shipped to the stand of and then inside centre, who burst through a tackle and dived over the line for the try.

Muntly added 7 conversions (Andrew 2, Parkin 4, Willets 1) to their 8 tries to make the Final score Muntly 31 – Ross Sutherland 14.

This was a really good Team performance against a strong Ross Sutherland outfit. It was also particularly pleasing to have all 27 Muntly players getting game time and playing well. Roll on next Sunday and Aberdeen Wanderers away.
