 Moray welcomed a touring u18 team from Toronto, Canada on Sunday and enjoyed a convincing victory by 57 points to 5 over the visitors
Moray playing with their team-mates from across the Highlands kicked off and built early pressure in the Canadian 22. They were awarded a penalty for offside and quickly tapped the ball and set up a couple of ruck phases before prop Morgan Page broke the defence to open the scoring. Fraser Mohun converted for an early 7-0 lead.
Moray continued to play intelligent rugby from the restart and posed questions for the Canadian defence whenever they had possession. On 15 minutes they were awarded another penalty and took a quick tap option to set up a ruck. The ball was moved down the backline and winger Mark Cousar went over in the corner to extend the lead to 12-0.
Shortly before ½ time the home side won another penalty in mid field and again to the quick tap option to move the ball along the backline to Angus Mohun, who broke through the defence and scored under the posts. His brother Fraser Mohun converted for a 19-0 lead.
On half time Moray were again building pressure in the visitors 22. They won a lineout and moved the ball wide. Scrum half Nathan Grimwood was on hand to take the scoring pass and extend the lead to 24-0
The second half saw Moray continue to play intelligent and patient rugby, building pressure through phases of forwards play before releasing their backs to exploit gaps in the defence out wide. Winger Mark Cousar took on the visitors form half way and broke several tackles before being pulled down short of the line. Good support by scrum half Grimwood was rewarded when he picked up the offload from winger Cousar and went over to extend the lead to 29-0.
From the restart Moray took advantage of a short kick off won the ball on half way. Prop Page tore through the Canadian defence before being stopped on 5 m. Scrum half Grimwood was again on hand to finish the move off and the try was converted by Mohun for a 36-0 lead
Midway through the second half Moray centre Angus Mohun took possession on half way and waltzed his way up the pitch evading several tackles before scoring under the posts with his brother Fraser adding the conversion to take the score to 43-0.
20 minutes into the second half and Moray again won possession in their own half and moved the ball down their back line to winger Gregor. He outpaced the cover defence and went in under the posts for a try converted by Fraser Mohun to bring up the half century.
The visiting team were playing for pride by this point but never gave up and in the final 5 minutes forced a series of penalties in the Moray 22 for offside at the ruck. Their second row finally broke the defence and they rumbled over in the corner for an unconverted try.
Moray rounded off the match with a try by prop Page converted by Mohun to make the final score 57-5
This was a good solid all round team performance from the home side. The score made it look one sided but the Canadian visitors made the Moray lads work for every point and it was always an enjoyable contest to watch.
Forwards played their part in securing good set piece ball and competing in the loose to turnover possession. They also set up the phases necessary to suck in defences before good distribution by scrum half Grimwood and standoff Mohun allowed the Moray backs to expose weakness wide out in the visitors back line.
To the Canadians credit they fought to the very end and were rewarded with a well worked score. They move on to play Lochaber before finishing their tour at Murrayfield to watch Scotland v Italy.
Moray along with their team mates from across the north move on to a Cally Plate semi final in a week v Montrose.
