MORAY 7 DEESIDE 36
Wed 18th Nov 2015
Caledonia League Division 2 North leaders Deeside were too strong for Moray last Saturday when they won by 36 points to 7 at Morriston.

The visitors kicked off, immediately regained the ball but were forced into touch, 5 metres from the line. The line was taken against the throw, however, and after a few drives at the line which pulled in the Moray defence, the ball was moved wide and an unconverted try was scored out wide for a 0-5 lead.

In the 8th minute, the Elgin side replied. Wing forward Marc Higgins pounced on a fumble, fly-hacked the ball towards the line and outpaced the defence to score the try. Wing Callum Wright converted to secure a 7-5 lead.

Deeside continued to press but the home defence was resolute. In the 23rd minute, however, they regained the lead. An attacking scrum 5 was cleanly taken, the ball moved wide and the full-back came into the line at a good angle and scored. The try was converted for a 7-12 lead.

The Banchory based side were playing very organised and aggressive rugby and in the 30th minute, added to their lead. The home side lost ball on the half-way line and the big second-row quickly drove towards and was eventually taken down on the 22. The set ball was moved from the break down and a long miss pass took out the last of the Moray defence allowing the full-back to score his second try. With the conversion points added, the lead was now 7-19.

From the restart, the visitors were handed a scrum on the half-way line after the kick-off went straight into touch. The scrum-half broke quickly to the right and swift hands found the full-back out wide. He outpaced the defence to score his hat-trick try, an unconverted try, for 7-24, the half-time score.

Moray started the second half brightly but the Banchory sides line speed in defence was good and they dealt well with any attack.

In the 48th minute and with their first venture into the home half, Deeside stretched their lead further. Lost ball by the Elgin side was quickly moved wide and the outside centre rounded the defence and scored an unconverted try out wide for 7-29.

Two minutes later, Moray were on the attack and grubbered the ball through. The ever alert full-back gathered the ball and noticed the home defence was not organised and decided to run from his own line rather than clear with a kick. He drifted past a number of defenders and after a few offload passes, they scored a converted try for a 7-36 lead.

The two scores had somewhat been against the run of play but the Moray heads did not go down and they returned to the offensive.

The final 30 minutes was completely played in the Deeside half with a great deal of that time being spent encamped in the 22 but the home side could not break down a very organised and determined defence. They attacked round the fringes through the forwards but were repelled by the big visiting pack and when ball was moved wide, the defence line speed left them with no room to create clear opportunities.

The whistle went with the final score Moray 7 Deeside 36.

The Deeside 15 were a big and very well drilled team and in the first half stamped their authority on the game. They put real pace on to the ball, scored some fine tries and are worthy of their unbeaten position in the league. The Moray side stuck in well and dominated possession and territory in the second half but could not find a way of breaking down the solid wall of defence.

This Saturday, Moray are on the road to Fort William to play Lochaber.
