MORAY 30 ROSS SUTHERLAND 10 |
Tue 27th Oct 2015 |
Moray returned to winning ways last Saturday with a good and hard earned 30 points to 10 win over 2nd placed Ross Sutherland in the BT Caledonia League Division 2 North.
The Invergordon side kicked off playing downhill and in the first few phases of the game looked very threatening after making inroads into the home half. In the 4th minute, however, it was Moray who took the lead. Good continuity play took them to 25 metres out and a penalty was awarded for 'over the top' at a ruck. Wing Andrew McBean stepped up and landed the kick for a 3-0 lead.
The initial scrums had highlighted that the forwards were up for it and in the 10th minute, a scrum 30 metres out, was taken against the head and a penalty awarded when the visitor's scrum disintegrated. McBean kick was pulled just wide.
Six minutes later, and after handling in the ruck, another penalty was awarded and this time McBean added the points for a 6-0 lead.
Ross rallied and produced their best spell of the game but some resolute defending and strong scrummaging held them out leaving the half time score; Moray 6 Ross Sutherland 0.
The home side started the second half very positively and strongly and within 5 minutes, had scored twice.
In the 43rd minute, a series of drives by both forwards and backs pulled in the Ross defenders, creating extra numbers away from the breakdown. Ball was moved quickly away and wing forward Harvey Freeman put wing Keiran Young free on the overlap to score an unconverted try out wide for 11-0.
Two minutes later, ball was opened after a solid scrum in their own half. A good break by centre Cameron Renton was supported inside by replacement scrum half Aled Herbert and he, after being tackled 5 metres out, popped the ball to wing forward Neil Wiseman who scored under the posts. McBean added the extras for 18-0.
The Invergordon side added their first points of the game through a penalty for 18-3 after the home side were penalised for 'driving up' in a scrum, 30 metres out.
Moray extended their lead in the 58th minute when ball was moved wide from a scrum 5 and Freeman was on hand to get an inside pass from Renton and score the try. McBean conversion attempt came off the post leaving the score at 23-3.
The visitors returned to the offensive but the Elgin side were resolute in defence and repelled any danger.
The home side were trying hard to get the bonus point fourth try and had a couple of good opportunities but in their desperation, threw a couple of forward passes which thwarted the chances.
Ross never gave up and in the 76th minute scored, what turned out to be a consolation try, when a quick tap penalty near the line allowed the forwards to drive over. The conversion was added for 23-10.
Moray were still striving to get the bonus point and in the final play, pick of the backs Renton received ball on a good line and broke through the middle of the defence to score under the posts. McBean added the conversion for a final score; Moray 30 Ross Sutherland 0.
The Invergordon side have been in good form so far this season but the home side put in a very accomplished and committed performance and were very worthy of their win and bonus point. Defence by both forwards and backs was strong and effective, the scrummage was muscular and posed real problems and the tries were all taken well.
This Saturday, Moray make the long trip to Shetland on BT Caledonia League Division 2 North business.
