MORAY 91 STORNOWAY 0
Wed 6th May 2015
Moray convincingly defeated Stornoway, by 91 points to nil, in their final BT Caledonia League Division 2 North match of the season.

The Elgin side opened the scoring after only three minutes when after a phase of driving and popping play, prop Connor Cameron broke the final line of defence and scored an unconverted try for a 5-0 lead.

Seven minutes later, centre Ewan Stuart scored a second when he picked a great line after a visitor's
line-out was taken against the throw, 35 metres out. Full-back Andrew McBean added the conversion points for 12-0.

Moray were in control and posing real problems in both the tight and the loose and in the 20th minute added a third. Ball was won in midfield and good quick hands delivered the ball to wing Keiran Young, who outstripped the defence to score an unconverted try out wide and stretch the lead to 17-0.

From the restart, the Elgin side scored the fourth and bonus point try. The ball was immediately run back at the islanders and Stand-off Chris Clarke deftly chipped the defence. Wing Callum Wright collected the ball on its second bounce and ran in unopposed. McBean added the extras for 24-0.

In the 29th minute, another line-out was taken against the throw and prop Ross Joy's barging run was finally stopped just a few metres from the line. No 8 Neil Wiseman picked up at the base and broke through to score an unconverted try and a 29-0 lead.

The home side were starving their opponents of ball and added a further two tries in three minutes before half-time.

The first, a second for Stuart, was scored when he took the ball at pace after a scrum win against the head and McBean added the conversion. The second was created by the forwards when Cameron offloaded to Laurie McCutcheon and the big second row made the line for a try, converted by McBean and a half-time lead of 43-0.

The sizeable crowd were being treated to an open game of rugby with both teams trying to run the ball whenever the opportunity arose. Moray, however, were winning the bulk of the ball and the Stornoway opportunities were restricted.

In a three minute spell around the 50th minute, two further tries were added. Wright scored his second of the afternoon when a good handling move created the space to score an unconverted try out wide. Not to be outdone, his fellow wing Young scored his second, another unconverted try, when ball was quickly moved through hands after a scrum was taken against the head on the
half-way.

Seven minutes later, Wright scored his third. Stornoway were on the attack and progressed into the home 22. The ball was turned over, quickly moved wide and the winger ran three-quarters the length of the field to score under the posts. He converted his own try to take the lead to 60-0.

Two tries within a minute of each other, both converted by Clarke, increased the lead to 74-0. The first was set up after Clarke grubbered through and hooker Marc Higgins regained the ball on the deck, allowing the ball to be spun wide and McBean to score. The second and his first for the club, was scored by replacement wing-forward Chris Robottom and came directly from the restart when he burst through the middle of the defence and had the legs to make the line.

In the 30th minute, Young also scored his third try of the afternoon. He received ball out on the wing, feigned to cut inside and then went outside the defence to score. Clarke added the extras for 81-0.

Wing-forward Kris Morrison got on the score sheet in the 72nd minute when he scored an unconverted try out wide and in the final play of the game, Wright scored his fourth after a good break by Callum Watson from inside his own half. Clarke pushed the conversion kick wide leaving the final score Moray 91 Stornoway 0.

It had been an excellent final game of the season for the Moray side and they had treated the spectators to a fine game of running rugby. They had been dominant in all phases of the game and with ball in hand, had been clinical. The side will now have a break over the next few months and then return to prepare for next year's league campaign.
