MORAY 10 ABERDEENSHIRE 2NDS 31
Sun 8th Feb 2015
Moray took to the field last Saturday against an unbeaten Aberdeenshire 2nd XV in a BT Caledonia League Division 2 fixture and after a physical encounter, went down by 31 points to 10.

The reason for this league dominance soon became apparent when the visitors went 0-7 up with only 2 minutes of the match gone. The converted try was the result of Moray losing the ball in contact shortly after they had kicked off.

Seven minutes later, the Aberdeen side extended the lead when, following a powerful set scrummage drive, the blind-side flanker touched down under the posts. The simple conversion made the score 0-14 to the visitors.

The Elgin side were well and truly on the defensive with not only the bulky, well drilled opponents to contend with, but also the deteriorating weather conditions. The Arctic blast midway through the first half did subside but neither did the Shire dominance and they struck again from a scrum 5 metres from the home line. A forwards surging drive resulted in a try near the posts and the successful conversion saw half time reached with the score at 0-21.

The second half began a little more brightly for the home side, forcing three penalties, one of which stand-off Andrew McBean kicked for his side's first 3 points.

This proved to be a short-lived renaissance when home player Chris Robottom was yellow carded in the 54th minute. The team defended well with 14 men and actually scored next in the 61st minute in the sin bin period when winger Callum Wright picked up loose ball on the halfway line and sprinted 50 metres to touch down under the posts. McBean duly converted for 10-21.

Four minutes later the visitors were in the ascendency again when a quickly taken penalty for "hands in the ruck" was shipped wide for an unconverted, bonus point try in the corner and a 0-26 lead.

The last 10 minutes saw Moray fight hard but too many missed tackles and inconsistent lines-out saw the tie slip away and even a late yellow card for a Shire centre, for not releasing in the tackle, was to no avail.

With 2 minutes of the match remaining, the referee issued a third yellow, this time sinbinning Moray's Callum Watson. The Aberdeen side capitalised on this and scored a final unconverted try for a Final score of Moray10 Aberdeenshire 31.

Moray must quickly put this defeat behind them and get in a good week of training as this Saturday (tomorrow) they head for Aberdeen to play an Aberdeen University side in a BT Caledonia North League Division 2 fixture/BT Caledonia Bowl North semi-final double header.
