MORAY 16 GARIOCH 0 |
Wed 1st Oct 2014 |
Moray continued their winning ways in the BT Caledonia League Division 2 North last Saturday by defeating Garioch 16-0 at home.
The Inverurie side kicked off in front of a sizeable crowd of spectators and it was they who had most of the possession in the first quarter of the match. Their big and well drilled pack had to be repelled on a number of occasions but the home side's defence held strong.
The tackle area was proving to be a problem for both sides and in the 28th minute the referee issued the first of what was to be 4 "cards", sending Moray's Chris Clarke to the touch line for 10 minutes for repeated infringement. The resultant goal kick was missed leaving the score at nil all.
It took until as late as the 34th minute for the opening score when, after a prolonged attack involving slick handling by home short-handed backs, flanker Harvey A'j Freeman touched down near the posts. An easy conversion for full-back Andrew McBean and a 7-0 lead for Moray to take into the half-time break.
The Elgin side started the second half in positive manner, playing some excellent handling rugby.
In the 50th minute, it was the visitors who incurred the wrath of the referee and were yellow carded for a cynical professional foul which thwarted a promising Moray attack. McBean made no mistake with the kick to extend the lead to 10-0.
Ten minutes later it was Moray's Connor Cameron who received 10 minutes in the bin for repeated misdemeanour at the breakdown and the referee's patience was tested once too often 5 minutes later when Garioch's tight-head prop was shown a red card. The resulting penalty was neatly converted by McBean for a 13-0 lead.
Down to 14 men for the remainder of the match, the Garioch side continued to compete and only an offside offence 3 minutes from time allowed McBean to complete a perfect kicking performance for a final score of Moray 16 Garioch 0.
The home side had not been allowed to play as much of their usual expansive running game as they had wanted but had competed well against a strong Garioch side and ground out a very good win.
Hopefully Moray can continue their winning streak when they play Ross-Sutherland in Invergordon this Saturday, kick-off 3pm.
