SCOTLAND V ENGLAND – MURRAYFIELD TRIP 08/02/14 |
Mon 10th Feb 2014 |
It’s been a long time in the waiting, but we were going to Murrayfield, for our annual Six Nations trip.
Despite a change of coach (with no toilet!), and a yellow (banana) minibus accompanying the coach, Mini and S1/2 players, and accompanying adults set off for Murrayfield in good spirits. Scotland’s previous defeat away in Dublin was forgotten and there was hope of a good result ahead?
As we travelled down the A9 some of us saw the first ‘white stuff’ we’d seen this Winter. Without the ‘on board convenience’ we needed an extra short stop at Ballinluig, before we headed onto our food stop at Kinross. While some of the guys tucked into their Burger King, we met a coach load from Lossiemouth High School, including some of our players!! Plus the ‘banana bus appeared too!
On we went, and arrived at Murrayfield in good time, allowing players to a virtually empty stadium, find their seats in the North Stand and then go off and explore.
With trips to Murrayfield now twice a year, to see and Autumn International and Six Nations match, for some this is becoming a familiar place.
We watched as England warmed up at our end of the pitch, and assessed their form in warm up drills, and even one drill to take back for the S1/2s!!
The atmosphere was the usual adversarial mix of “Swing low…” versus shouts of “Scotland, Scotland”.
Our own Moray Low starting at 3, but the match itself was a surprisingly one sided affair, with England dominant with their influx of younger players, being bedded in ahead of the World Cup and Scotland gaining only occasional territory, and regularly appeared on the back foot.
As Andy Nicol, former Scotland scrum-half & captain said on the BBC Rugby website as his post match analysis, "Scotland can't be happy with that performance. The forwards were beaten in every aspect, and the backs had no platform. It is very disappointing. So many things went wrong for Scotland. A couple of years ago their line-out was outstanding. Now it has fallen apart. They lost five line-outs, conceded 16 penalties, there were 27 missed tackles. You're never going to win a game of rugby with these statistics."
After the match the group walked back to the coach, with mixed emotions and the minority (England supporters) happier with the outcome, amongst the full house of rugby fans leaving the stadium, in dribs and drabs.
Usually we have a long wait to leave the coach line up of parked vehicles nose to tail, but on this occasion we were able to get away relatively quickly but we still had the trawl back to the road bridge.
Once across we made good time, and again stopped at Kinross services only to be held up by a famous coffee shop’s member of staff!!
But from there on we made good time, with an extra ‘convenience stop’ at Ralia and the fresh air woke up the S1/2s and they even threw a rugby ball about in the dark!!
So, a good day out!!? Yes, some young players getting to see their first rugby international, a good experience for the S1/2 players to continue to bond, and good chat amongst the adults.
Our thanks should be offered to Maynes and John, our coach driver, Yvonne for co-ordinating the trip and of course Doc for arranging the tickets. We can now look forward to the Autumn Internationals, and cross fingers to see a win later in the year??
