GARIOCH 14 MORAY 11 |
Tue 7th Jan 2014 |
Moray's first outing of 2014 in the RBS Caledonia League Division 2 North, saw them travel to Inverurie to play second top of the table Garioch.
It was the Elgin side who started the match with the greater urgency, recycling the ball efficiently at the break-down and retaining possession for the first few minutes. This dominance resulted in a penalty which was kicked to touch on the home 22. From the resulting line-out Alex Stronach ran a good line towards the posts and the recycled ball was eventually touched down in the right corner by Ewan Stewart. Five nil to Moray after only four minutes.
In the 10th minute the visitors had an opportunity to extend their lead when the home side were penalised for not releasing the ball at a ruck. Dale Smith's kick from 45 metres, however, narrowly missed the target.
Garioch then began to play their way back into the game and in the 24th minute outside centre David Cribbes cut back inside to score near the posts. Stuart Napier successfully converted for a 7-5 lead.
With the rest of the half being fairly equally contested, this remained the score at half-time.
The second half began less well for the visitors with their forwards failing to secure the ball from the kick-off. Good defence however, held the big Garioch pack at bay.
In the 50th minute the home side missed with a penalty attempt when the Moray backs strayed off-side and it was the visitors who took the lead following two successful kicks at goal by Smith after the home team were penalised at ruck and line-out. This made the score 11-7 to Moray with a little over three quarters of the match gone.
Moray's hopes were further raised when Garioch were reduced to 14 players for 10 minutes, after their No.8 was yellow carded for tackling a player without the ball. This only served to galvanise the home side into action, with their beefy forwards making a number of assaults on Moray's heroic defensive line. This line was eventually breached in the 70th minute when Garioch's giant No.5, Sean Dey, crashed over under the posts. Napier's easy conversion gave the home team a 14-11 lead.
The visitors might have snatched victory towards the end with a good break on the left wing but it was thwarted by a try saving tackle by the home full-back.
This had been one of Moray's best performances of the season and they were unlucky not leave Inverurie with at least a share of the points.
Their next match is a home league tie against Aberdeenshire tomorrow (Saturday) at Morriston. Kick-off is 2pm.
