HIGHLAND 49 MORAY 0 |
Mon 16th Dec 2013 |
Moray made the trip to Inverness last Saturday, to play Highland in their latest RBS Caledonia League Division 2 North fixture and were soundly defeated by 49 points to nil by a very good Highland side.
The team had travelled with only 12 players due to a catalogue of injuries and work commitments but they were grateful to Highland for bolstering these numbers so that the game could be played.
The home side kicked off, in conditions that were atrocious with persistent rain and a strong wind, and immediately put the visitors under pressure. The visitors defended well, however, and it was not until the 23rd minute that Highland took the lead. A drive up the right wing by the forwards was halted and ball set. It was quickly moved wide from the breakdown and the wing scored an unconverted try for 5-0.
5 minutes later they scored a second unconverted try for 10-0 when a good handling move created the space to score out wide.
The Elgin side continued to defend bravely and on occasion put together an attacking move but in a three minute spell, just before half time, the home side added two further tries. The first came from some powerful scrummaging with the visitors conceding a penalty try which was converted and the second, another unconverted try, after a good handling move.
Half Time : Highland 22 Moray 0.
In a two minute spell around the 53rd minute, the Inverness side added two more unconverted tries to their tally, taking the score to 32-0. The first came from a push over try and the second from a break by the backs from inside their own half.
Highland added a seventh unconverted try in the 60th minute when the backs produced some good handling in the poor weather conditions after the forwards had set up position deep in the visitors half with a strong driving move.
The Moray lads were putting in a committed shift in defence and trying hard to make an impact in the opposition half but were up against a well organised and determined side.
Highland concluded the scoring with two late unconverted tries. The first was typical of some of their early tries when they forced their way into the 22 through driving play by the forwards and then opened the ball to the backs to score out wide. The second came as a result of another strong part of their play, the scrummage. A scrum 5 was taken against the head and with the wet underfoot conditions making it difficult to stop any forward momentum, they pushed over for the score.
Final score: Highland 49 Moray 0.
The depleted Moray side had shown plenty of heart and had done well to hold Highland in the first quarter of the game. The big Inverness pack then took the game by the scruff of the neck and the backs then produced some good handling in the wet and windy conditions and they thoroughly deserved their win.
The league fixture against Lochaber at home this Saturday has been postponed leaving the next game at Morriston to be the festive President's XV v Captain's XV match at 2pm on December 28th.
