MORAY 7 ROSS SUTHERLAND 20 07-12-13
Mon 9th Dec 2013
Ross Sutherland were the visitors to Morriston last Saturday for an RBS Caledonia League Division 2 North fixture. After a hard fought and close encounter, the Invergordon side scored two tries in the final 15 minutes to secure the win at 7-20.

It was Ross who took the initiative from the kick-off and after only 6 minutes put the first points on the board.

Following a spell of pressure in the 22, they were awarded a penalty when the home side went over the top at a ruck. The penalty was taken quickly and the forwards drove for the line. Ruck ball was moved wide to the backs and the right wing had just enough room to squeeze in at the corner and score an unconverted try for 0-5.

In the 18th minute, Moray had their first opportunity when centre Joe Macari collected ball on the half way line and took the ball all the way to the 5 metre line before being halted. The visitors were there first, turned the ball over and the chance was gone.

The next twenty minutes were played between the 22's with both teams giving as good as they got but in the final minute of the half, Ross extended their lead.

The home side had been strong at the scrum but on this occasion they lost a scrum around 10 metres inside their half. The ball was driven and then quickly released to the backs. For the second time, the right wing found enough room to squeeze in at the corner and score an unconverted try, leaving the half time score Moray 0 Ross Sutherland10.

The home side started the second half brightly and after 5 minutes, got themselves to a 5 metre offensive line-out. Unfortunately the referee adjudged the throw in as 'not straight' and the opportunity was lost.

Five minutes later, however, they made the break through. After a period of pressure in the 22, the forwards drove hard for the line and after a couple of phases, hooker Lewis Higgins made it over the line.

Full-back Andrew McBean added the conversion points to reduce the lead to 7-10.

Moray were back in the game and tried hard to get the score that would take them into the lead.

In the 65th minute, however, it was the visitors who created the position to score. A breach into the 22 and subsequent drives, pulled in defenders. The ball was moved quickly wide and another unconverted try was scored out wide giving an eight point advantage at 7-15.

The Elgin side tried hard to respond but Ross were defending well.

In the 78th minute, the Invergordon side capitalised on a penalty given on the half way line. They took clean ball from a line-out 5 as a result of an accurate kick to touch and drove for the line. The maul was stopped but the No 8 rolled off the back and scored a fourth and bonus point unconverted try in the corner leaving the final score Moray 7 Ross Sutherland 20.

It had been the usual hard fought encounter between the two sides but the Ross side had been more clinical when opportunities arose.

This weekend Moray are away to Inverness to play in form Highland in the league.
