GORDONSTOUN 17 MORAY 4 by Phil Kelly |
Mon 7th Oct 2013 |
Moray S1/2s were back on the road this week, playing the first of three planned fixtures against Gordonstoun for this season.
This week in the 13 a side fixture, which the Moray squad wanted to make more of an impression, and ably captain again by Gregor Townsend, managed to do so in the first period of play, as George Hurst scored from Moray’s first visit into the home side’s 5 metre, with the conversion kicked by ever consistent Rory Millar.
Early dominance by the visitors was counteracted by a good come back from the purple and blues who managed to score an equalising try and conversion before the break.
Gordonstoun sought reinforcements from their strong bench and started to take control of proceedings, managing to score two tries and a conversion without response.
Despite good pressure at the breakdown, Moray’s agony was increased with the loss of Ryan Robertshaw who has consistently tackled well at full back, but took one knock too many, and needed to be substituted mid way through the second period.
The school side became dominant in the third period, scoring two more unconverted tries, while Moray’s intensity seemed to wane but were never overawed, as good midfield runs from Jake Devlin and Ronan Walker and terrier like pressure was applied by Millar the scrum half.
All Moray players got a run out, so the squad system allows everyone to experience game time, which will hopefully benefit them later in the season??
So, it was well played today Gordonstoun, winning 17-4. In this physical encounter, Moray managed to maintain their composure against some big boys who have the pleasure of training more often, but Moray did have the hosts seriously worried in the early stages!!
So encouragement to both sides who will develop over the course of the season, as long as they keep working hard!! Each game shows that Moray S1/2 players are developing in their play, and that first victory can not be far away??
Moray S1/2s next fixture is home to Mackie next Sunday, at the start of the half term break.
