MORAY 9 GARIOCH 27 |
Wed 2nd Oct 2013 |
RBS Caledonia League Division 2 North table toppers Garioch, made the trip to Moray last Saturday and after a hard fought battle left with a 27-9 win.
After 5 minutes, the Elgin side took a 3-0 lead through the boot of full-back Andrew McBean when the opposition were penalised for crossing inside their 22.
Six minutes later, a forwards and backs move took Moray to a ruck deep in the Garioch 22. The referee awarded a penalty for hands in the ruck and McBean slotted the kick to extend the lead to 6-0.
For the next quarter of an hour or so, both sides had opportunities but defences stood firm.
In the 26th minute, however, the home side were penalised for handling on the deck, 25 metres out. With the penalty happening near the touchline, the Inverurie side kicked to touch, 5 metres out. Clean ball was taken and they used their considerable weight advantage to drive the ruck over the line for an unconverted try, reducing the lead to 6-5.
McBean had an opportunity in the 32nd minute to add 3 points but he pushed the penalty kick wide of the mark.
In the final minute of the first half, Garioch took the lead. The home side were pressing inside the opposition half but the visitors secured the ball and started an attack of their own. The first line of defence was breeched and the ball opened. With the defence in disarray, they found themselves with an overlap and they ran in another unconverted try for a 6-12 lead.
In injury time, McBean had another opportunity but unfortunately pushed the kick wide again leaving the half time score Moray 6 Garioch 12.
Within two minutes of the restart, the Elgin side had reduced the lead to 9-12 when he landed a penalty after the visitors were caught over the top at a ruck.
Ten minutes later Garioch regained their six point advantage when they landed a penalty from 45 metres out.
Moray tried hard to respond and got themselves into a good position in the opposition 22 on a couple of occasions but an unforced error and good defence thwarted the opportunity.
In the 63rd minute, the Garioch No. 8 stormed through the home front line and offloaded allowing his wing to score out wide. The conversion attempt was missed leaving the score 9-20.
Two minutes later, McBean had a further penalty opportunity to reduce the leeway but the normally reliable goalkicker was out of sorts and pulled the attempt.
Moray tried hard over the closing 15 minutes to get back in the game but in the final minute Garioch pounced on a dropped ball in a home backs move and a couple of passes later scored under the posts. The conversion points were added leaving the final score Moray 9 Garioch 27.
It had been a very spirited display by the Moray side. The forwards faced up to their counterparts who had size and weight advantage and they won their fair share of ball in the tight and the loose. The backs were full of energy and endeavour and tried hard to break down a stuffy opposition defence. The difference between the sides was that the Garioch side capitalised on any missed tackles or unforced error.
This Saturday Moray are away to play Aberdeenshire 2nds in the league.
