 A very pleasant Autumnal day was the backdrop to Moray S1/2s first away fixture at Huntly RFC, that is once half of the squad found the correct Huntly venue!
Those who are ‘Micro/Mini matured’ are used to one venue, whereas this fixture was being held at the Huntly’s other ground! Chopping players warm up time down before kick off!
Following last week’s initial home defeat against Caithness, this journey along the A96 was hoped to show lessons learned during Tuesday evening’s training session.
Huntly preferred the option of 15 a side, which is feasible under S1/2 rules, but as this left us with no forward substitutes and an uneasy kick off, hoping that no one from the pack would get injured.
The first period of play saw both sides feeling their way into the match with Moray gaining some good early possession. But, scoring went with the flow of play, as both sides crossed the try line.
 Rory Millar playing at scrum half managing to get over the Huntly try line from possession within the home sides 22, and then converted the try himself, which typified a very strong individual performance from Rory in open play, with the period score ending 8-4, at the first interval.
The second period was much more difficult for Moray, especially as Huntly almost scored from the restart and they also found gaps, predominately from a mesmerising flanker who found space with his fluid movement, down the Moray wings scoring an unconverted try, moving the score onto 11-4.
Huntly appeared to be cruising to a comfortable victory especially after scoring a fourth try. But, Moray found strength inspired by Gregor Alexander’s captain’s lead, to score two more tries from Rory Hands, after possession within the Huntly 22, and a strong midfield run from Ronan Walker, with Rory Millar adding an extra point from one of the tries.
The competitive nature of this ‘friendly’ did lead to minor knocks for both teams, but nothing that was too serious.
 Other strong runs from both Moray second row Jake Devlin and full back Josh Chapman in the third period could have stolen a late away victory, but stout defending from Huntly held off this late revival.
So, a score of 15-11 was a fair result from an evenly contested fixture, which has shown developments from Moray’s training during the week.
Moray S1/2s next fixture is away to Gordonstoun next Saturday. Let’s hope to see continued improvements in aspects of match play from the S2 players in the squad as the next fixture is tailored towards them.
