MORAY 10 GARIOCH 24
Tue 2nd Apr 2013
Moray lost out by 24 points to 10 against Garioch last Saturday in their penultimate RBS Caledonia League Division 2 North league fixture. The hard fought win ensured that the Inverurie side picked up the league title this season.

Garioch started the game the brighter and in the 13th minute took the lead. A line-out to the home side, 5 metres from their line, was taken against the throw. The ball was moved wide and the stand-off scored a converted try under the posts for a 0-7 lead.

Five minutes later they extended the lead to 0-10 when a penalty was landed after the Elgin side handled on the deck in their 22.

Moray started to come into the game more and in the 24th minute, reduced the lead. After a couple of breaches into the opposition 22, they were awarded a penalty for an infringement in the ruck. Stand-off Jamie Hickie stepped up and reduced the lead to 3-10.

Having just got back into the game, missed tackles cost them another try four minutes later when the inside centre broke through and scored a converted try for 3-17.

In the final minutes of the first half, Moray pressed the opposition line but some big tackling kept them out leaving the half time score, Moray 3 Garioch 17.

Six minutes into the second half, the Elgin side reduced the leeway. An attack in the visiting 22 was rewarded with a penalty when Garioch were caught offside. A quick penalty was taken, the ball driven once and then opened to the backs. The ball went through quick hands to wing Andras Matyas who scored his first try for the home side. Full back Andrew McBean landed the conversion from the touchline for 10-17.

Moray continued to press but somewhat against the general run of play, the Inverurie side stretched the lead in the 63rd minute. Line out ball was taken on the home 22 and the ball moved to the backs. A strong run by the inside centre broke a couple of tackles and a simple offload allowed the try to be scored under the posts. The conversion was added for 10-24.

The home side returned to the offensive and tried hard to get back into the game but Garioch needed the win to secure the league and tackled hard, leaving the final score Moray 10 Garioch 24.

Congratulations go to Garioch on winning the league as they had been the team to catch all season. The young Moray side can feel proud of their efforts of the afternoon. They were up against a much bigger pack but competed well and had it not been for some big solid tackling by the visitors, they might have had more success in attack.

Thanks go to Match Sponsors Duncan & Todd and to Ball Sponsors J.F. Royans, Butchers.

This Saturday (6th April), Moray have their final league fixture of the season when Aberdeen Wanderers visit Morriston, kick off 3pm.
