RAF LOSSIEMOUTH 45 MORAY 20 |
Tue 26th Mar 2013 |
RAF Lossiemouth comfortably won the latest RBS Caledonia Regional Division 2 North local derby league fixture against Moray last Saturday by 45 points to 20.
The Elgin side kicked off on a bitterly cold afternoon and with a very strong wind at their backs.
The early phases were played in the home half and in the 5th minute, the Elgin side took a 0-3 lead when stand-off Jamie Hickey landed a penalty after an offside decision.
The fliers immediately took the game back to Moray with their bigger forwards driving at all opportunities.
In the 11th minute they took the lead when after several phases of driving play, second row Gary Perkins scored. Stand-off John Lockwood landed the conversion for 7-3.
The home side continued their driving play whilst the visitors tried to get the ball quickly away from the break down and in the next quarter of an hour they cancelled each other out.
In the 25th minute, however, the RAF side stretched the lead. A penalty was awarded in the 22 and inside centre Lance Tallett quickly tapped, broke a couple of tackle attempts and scored. Lockwood landed the additional points for 14-3.
Within two minutes, the Elgin side retorted and reduced the lead to 14-10. A penalty in the home 22 was quickly taken and after a couple of pops, prop Connor Cameron forced his way over the line with Hickey adding the conversion points.
In the 32nd minute, the visitors leaked another penalty in their half. For a second time, Tallett caught the defence sleeping and forced his way over the line for the score. Lockwood added 2 further points for 21-10, the half time score.
In the 49th minute, Tallett scored his third try of the afternoon following a number of forward drives at the line. Lockwood slotted the conversion for 28-10.
The Lossie team were playing the conditions well and in the 55th minute moved further ahead. Lockwood picked up ball in his own half and a mazy run saw him break the defence and score. He missed the conversion of his own try leaving the score 33-10.
In the 60th minute, Tallett scored his fourth of the afternoon with Lockwood adding the conversion for 40-10.
Although well out of the game, Moray rallied in the latter stages of the match.
In the 62nd minute they reduced the leeway when Cameron got his second of the afternoon when he forced his way over the line after some good play up the flank. Hickey’s attempt at the conversion swung in the wind leaving the score 40-15.
Six minutes later, they reduced the lead further. A driving play by the forwards took them into the home 22 to a ruck. Ball was moved quickly and an overlap created for winger Ewan Simpson to score out wide. Hickey couldn’t add the conversion with the score at 40-20.
The Elgin side continued to press in the final stages.
In the 78th minute, they were attacking up the left wing but ‘Man of the Match’ Tallett intercepted on his own 22 and ran 70 metres to score his fifth try of the afternoon. Lockwood could not add the conversion points leaving the final score, RAF Lossiemouth 45 Moray 20.
It had been the usual hard and physical local derby but in this instance, the Lossiemouth side had played the conditions better with their bigger forwards having a good day in scrum and in driving mauls and with Tallett making the best of the opportunities presented.
The Moray heads never went down though and they finished the stronger.
This Saturday, Moray are at home and have another hard fixture against league leaders Garioch. Kickoff is 3pm.
