MORAY U18 V CAITHNESS CALLY CUP ¼ FINAL |
Tue 19th Mar 2013 |
Moray welcomed Caithness to Elgin for the Cally cup ¼ final match and put in a clinical performance to book their place in the Semi final, running up 65 points with no reply.
The visitors kicked off and Moray soon took the initiative form a scrum on half way.
Stand off Duncan Steven kicked behind the Caithness defence and good following up by winger John Marwick allowed him to pick up and go over in the right hand corner to open the score.
A difficult conversion attempt by winger Lewis McDonald came back off the crossbar.
Caithness picked up the game from the restart and spent the next 10 minutes in the Moray 22 but failed to convert the pressure into points with too many knock-ons at crucial moments.
Moray finally broke out from a scrum on their 10 m line when no 8 Joe Vickery picked up at the base and exploded through the fringe defence to run in a try from 60m and make it 10 nil after 16 min.
The restart was well gathered by Aaron Logan who led a driving maul all the way to the Caithness 22m. The ball was moved wide but knocked on and play brought back for an offside infringement from Caithness. Moray kicked to touch and the lineout was knocked on allowing a scrum to Caithness. The Moray back row were quick to pressure Caithness’s no 10 as he tried to kick clear and Kris Morrison pounced on a dropped ball to make it 15-0.
Moray again won the restart and no 10 Steven kicked clear and good following up by full back Kieran Young to kick the ball through the defence and allow Moray’s 10 to complete the touch down and make it 20-0 after 25 minutes.
Moray were now firing on all cylinders and gathered the kick off before setting up a ruck on their 22. The ball was moved through the backline to winger Mcdonald who sped down the wing and went in under the posts. Matty Smith converted to make it 27-0.
Moray finished the half with a well worked try after taking the ball through several phases in the forwards to suck in the cover defence before spinning it wide to full back Young who went over in the corner to give the home team a well earned 32-0 lead.
Moray started the second half well and set up a ruck just short of the Caithness line. The ball was moved down the back line with no 8 Joe Vickery coming into the line and crashing over under the posts to make it 37-0. Smith converted.
Moray quickly followed up with another try by winger Kieran Rodger after centre Cruden had set up a ruck in midfield on the visitors 22.
Caithness battled back into the Moray 22 from the restart and won a scrum in the 22. Unfortunately they couldn’t control the ball and flanker Morrison was sharp enough to gather the loose ball and break through the defence before sprinting the length of the pitch to make it 49-0. Smith converted to take the lead to 51-0.
Moray then followed up with another try from a lineout with hooker Raoul Sutcliffe going over under the posts for a converted try to make it 58-0.
The home team were now playing with real aplomb and scrum half Smith was unlucky not to score what would have been a super try with some deft footballing skills but the ball just ran over the deadball line.
Moray’s final try came from a quickly taken penalty on half way which was moved down the backline to winger Marwick who sprinted clear to score under the posts for another converted try. This was a comprehensive performance by Moray and although Caithness were under the cosh for most of the game they played with great spirit and never gave up.
The Moray lads will need to tighten up on a few areas before the semi final but if they play to their strengths and work as a team then they can look forward to the match with confidence.
The second row of Watters and Robertson provided a great powerbase in the scrum and props Logan and Ward as well as sub Grant were effective in the scrum and the loose. The back row of Dale, Morrison and Vickery were everpresent and a constant threat.
