Moray made the trip to Aberdeen last weekend and comprehensively defeated Grampian Police by 66 points to 7 to take their place in the draw for the next round of the RBS North Regional Bowl.
In the first play of the game, Moray took the lead.
Clean ball was taken at a line out in the home 22 and a couple of rucking phases were set up. From the second phase the ball was moved wider and second row Laurie McCutcheon received the ball and forced his way over the line for the score. Full back Andrew McBean pushed the conversion kick to leave the score 0-5.
The Elgin side were dominant in this early spell of the match and added two further tries before the 10 minute mark.
The first, an unconverted try, was scored by centre Alex Stronach after ball was taken against the throw at a line in the Police 22 and then spun wide creating the space.
The second try emanated from a good break from inside their own 22 and was finished off by centre Phil Abbott when he received an inside pass from his centre partner Stronach. McBean added the conversion points for 0-17.
Five minutes later McBean added a penalty for 0-20 when the home side were caught offside at a ruck, 30 metres out.
Moray were running the ball at every opportunity and in the 30th minute they stretched their lead.
Ball was won at a line out and a drive, then ruck set. Ball was moved through hands in the backs and Abbott scored his second of the afternoon out wide. McBean could not add the conversion points leaving the score 0-25.
Five minutes later, they scored their final points of the first half when McCutcheon got his second score of the afternoon.
Again the score came from clean line out ball and after a couple of phases; the second row breached the defence and score. The conversion attempt drifted wide leaving the half time score Grampian Police 0 Moray 30.
When the Police tight head prop left the field injured at half time, and as there was no front row substitute, scrums became uncontested for the remainder of the match.
The visitors started the second half as brightly as they had the first and immediately added to their tally.
A driving play involving both forwards and backs took play to a ruck, 5 metres from the line. Scrum half Aled Herbert quickly moved ball wide and Stronach found space to run round the last man and make his way under the posts to score his second try. McBean added the extra points for 0-37.
In the 52nd minute, wing forward Marc Higgins got his name on the score sheet when, at pace, he took a short pop pass from a ruck after some good build up play down the left side of the pitch. McBean failed to add the conversion points leaving the score 0-42.
Eight minutes later, replacement wing Ewan Simpson scored the individual try of the afternoon.
Moray won ball in their own 22 and moved the ball wide to the wing. He set off on a run that took him ¾ the length of the pitch and past several defenders to the score. The normally very reliable McBean was having an off day with the boot and he missed the conversion for 0-47.
The Police heads never went down and they remained determined and in the 63rd minute got themselves on the score sheet. A penalty was given in the visitor’s 22 for over the top at a ruck and it was quickly taken and a converted try scored to reduce the lead top 7-47.
Within two minutes, the Elgin side retorted andStronach scored his third try when he rounded the wing after a good break by McBean. Stand off Tony Mcloughlin added the conversion for 7-54.
Moray rounded off the afternoon with two final tries in the last 10 minutes of the game.
The first, and Abbott’s third, was scored when, after a mix up at the back of an uncontested scrum, Herbert picked up, broke, drew the last man and offloaded to the centre to score. Mcloughlin converted for 7-61.
And finally, McCutcheon also got his third of the afternoon when he scored an unconverted try out wide after a good running play involving forwards and backs.
Final score :Grampian Police 7 Moray 66.
It had been a very comfortable and comprehensive victory for the Moray side which had seen them run in eleven tries. The forwards were dominant in scrum (in the first half) and line and were always keen to get the ball in hands and make ground.
Behind the scrum, they were assured in defence and created real problems for the opposition with ball in hand.
With the Autumn Internationals in progress, Moray’s next game is at home to Banff in the league on Saturday 1st December. Kick-off is 2pm.
