DEESIDE U18 V MORAY U18 – 10/11/12
Tue 13th Nov 2012
Moray u18 were on the road on Saturday with a fixture at Deeside.

The game proved to be another tough fixture and after fighting back early in the second half the Moray lads lost concentration and the game in the last quarter to go down 36-7 – a score slightly flattering to Deeside but empathising their overall control and clinical punishment of Moray mistakes

Moray kicked off and both teams probed the opposition defences – Deeside using a kicking game to open up play and Moray trying to move the ball through the backs.

Deeside opened the score after 10 minutes when after winning a slightly lucky decision for a scrum on 5 m after the ball had gone dead in goal they moved the ball along the backline before their scrum half went over in the corner after creating the extra man. The conversion from out wide was missed to make it 5-0.

Moray then took play deep into Deeside territory using their effective offload game but couldn’t make the pressure count.

Deeside came back at Moray and after 20 minutes extended their lead after winning a penalty for offside they took their chance and moved the ball wide to the winger who drove over in the corner to make it 10 -0.

Moray continued to compete in the half but were making unable of take their chances with some strong defence keeping them out despite good offloading breaks led by captain Joe Vickery and great running from deep
by full back Ewan Stuart.

The second half opened with more focus from Moray and they enjoyed the early pressure but some sloppy play giving away needless penalties let Deeside off the hook and they took the chance to extend their lead to 15-0 after moving the ball to their centre who slipped through 3 tackles to score in the corner.

This galvanised the Moray lads and they enjoyed their best spell of play in the game with some great open offloading play and sustained pressure – Josh Grundie was unlucky not to score after breaking and being held up short of the line. Josh Valentine at centre was also making some telling breaks through the Deeside midfield. After 15 minutes of the half the Moray pressure was rewarded with a try after a sustained attack in the

Deeside 22 with several rucks drawing in the defence before the ball was moved to Duncan Steven who drove over between the Deeside 10 and 12 to score under the posts. Matty Smith converted to make it 15-7.

After this the game really opened up with both teams attacking from deep and trying to gain the upper hand. Deeside were the team that landed the killer blow with a well worked try from a scrum on the Moray 22 when
their winger cut back on a great angle to score close to the posts. The conversion was good to extend their lead to 22-7 after 60 min. They sealed the game with 2 late converted try’s in the last 3 minutes to make the final score 36-7.

The Moray lads showed some great endeavour for periods of the game but ultimately surrendered possession at key moments with careless penalties which cost them dear. The team need to focus on converting pressure into points and retaining possession when they have done the hard work to win the ball. A strong scrum gives them a good foundation to build on and with some work on the training ground they can develop the rest of their game and regain the winning habit.
