MORAY 39 ORKNEY 2NDS 12
Tue 24th Apr 2012
Moray progressed to the final of the Brin Cup last Saturday when they overcame Orkney 2nds by 39 points to 12 at Morriston.

The islanders kicked off and in the first attacking move Moray opened the scoring when centre Cameron Hughes drifted through a gap in the defence and scored a try out wide.

Full back Andrew McBean could not add the conversion points leaving the score 5-0.

In the 19th minute, Hughes added his second. A break through the middle of the defence by wing Ryan Anderson created the space and a simple offload to the centre allowed the score to be run in. This time McBean landed the kick for 12-0.

The Elgin side were dictating the playing and in the 25th minute added a third. Stand-off Craig Forster broke blind after ball was delivered following a ruck on the half way line. With the defence line advancing, he deftly chipped the ball to the corner. Wing Richard Woods reached the ball first, picked it up and made the line for an unconverted try and a 17-0 lead.

Seven minutes later, a fourth try was scored, this time through the forwards. A penalty on the 22 was despatched to the corner. Clean ball was taken at the line out and a driving maul ensued which saw hooker Johnny Haslam touch the ball down over the line. McBean added the conversion points for 24-0.

Orkney had their best spell late in the half and put together some phases of play in the home 22. Defence was solid, however, and the ball was eventually driven out of the 22 and the opportunity was gone leaving the half time score Moray 24 Orkney 2nds 0.

Within 2 minutes of the restart, the home side had extended their lead. Orkney won a scrum, 5 metres from their line, but the kick attempt to touch was sliced. McBean collected the ball, found a huge hole in the defence and made the line for an unconverted score and a 29-0 lead.

Four minutes later, second row Ross Joy added his name to the score sheet. Again a clearing kick was miscued and this time replacement wing John Hester ran the ball back and in contact offloaded, allowing the forward to score. McBean’s conversion attempt came up short leaving the score 34-0.

In a five minute spell, mid way through the half, two Moray players were sin binned for infringements.

It was when down to 13 players that Orkney scored their first try after their loose head prop barged his way through the defence. The conversion was added to reduce the lead to 34-7.

In the 75th minute, the Elgin side again stretched the lead. Pressure on a move by the islanders in their own half saw the ball spilled. A home player put foot the ball and Hester made it to the ball first, picked it up and scored an unconverted try for 39-7.

Two minutes from time, the islanders added a 2nd try when in a similar way to the final Moray try, the ball was kicked through in open play and the inside centre made it to the ball for an unconverted try.

Final score : Moray 39 Orkney 2nds 12.

It had been a very solid display by the Moray side who had controlled long spells of the game and thoroughly deserved their victory.

Moray will have to wait till this weekend to find out who they will play in the final as Strathspey play RAF Lossiemouth in the other semi-final.
