LOCHABER 0 MORAY 55 |
Tue 6th Mar 2012 |
Moray moved to the top of the RBS Caledonia Regional League Division 2 North last Saturday when they comprehensively defeated Lochaber by 55 points to 0 in a game played at Kingussie due to a waterlogged pitch in Fort William.
In the 5th minute, the Elgin side opened their account. Ball was moved blind from a scrum in the 22 and left wing Richard Woods made a good break before offloading inside to No 8 Stuart Harrington who scored an unconverted try in the corner for a 0-5 lead.
Although they created a number of good scoring opportunities, it was not until the 37th minute that they increased the lead.
Woods again started the move with a good run up the left wing before setting up the ball. A couple of popping passes later saw wing forward Neil Wiseman crash over the line for the score. Stand-off Andrew McBean landed the conversion points for a 0-12 lead.
On the stroke of half-time, the visitors added another. A penalty was given in the Lochaber half and the ball spun wide. The ball reached outside-centre Declan Fives and he dummied and then cut inside to score under the posts.
McBean added the conversion points to leave the half-time score, Lochaber 0 Moray 19.
Immediately from the restart, the Elgin side scored their fourth and the bonus point try. A penalty was despatched to touch five metres from the line. Clean ball was taken and a forward drive set. Second-row Ross Joy emerged from the pack and burst over the line. McBean slotted the conversion kick for 0-26.
In the 48th minute, Fives made a break and McBean was on hand to finish off with an unconverted try, stretching the lead to 0-31.
Moray were in complete command of the game and four minutes later added another unconverted score. Harrington scored his second try when he went blind after some good driving play in the opposition 22.
In the 60th minute Harrington scored his third try of the afternoon after another forward driving play down the right side of the field. McBean added the conversion points for 0-43.
Lochaber did not have any answer to the running power and ball retention of the Moray forwards and backs. In the 68th minute, replacement wing Sean Keenan got his name on the score sheet when he finished off a handling move by the backs after good ball was set up in the opposition 22.
With McBean now watching from the touch line, Captain and wing-forward Marc Higgins took up the kicking duties. He landed the conversion to stretch the lead to 0-50.
To round off the afternoon’s scoring, Higgins scored out wide after a penalty 15 metres out was moved quickly. He could not convert his own try leaving the final score Lochaber 0 Moray 55.
After a slow start, it had been a resounding victory for the Elgin side which sees them one game away from winning the league. They had been strong in the scrum and at the line, but it was in the loose and with ball in hand that both forwards and backs had posed problems for the Lochaber side all afternoon.
The final game of the league season is on March 17th when Aberdeenshire 2nds visit Morriston Playing Fields. A win will see Moray crowned champions.
