MORAY U16 V ORKNEY U16 - 5TH NOVEMBER 2011
Tue 8th Nov 2011
Moray welcomed Orkney to Morriston and put in a great performance to win 25-12.

The visitors kicked off in perfect conditions and Moray had the early pressure driving forward with a series of well worked rucks before releasing their backs. Centre Josh Grundie and wing Toby Jefferies combined well to break from half way and were only stopped by a high tackle by Orkney.

Moray opened the score after 8 min with a well worked try. The pack won a scrum on the Orkney 22 and Moray quickly moved the ball wide through the backs to Alan Hunte on the wing who sped over to score in the corner.

From the restart Moray kept the pressure on and drove straight up the park. Orkney were penalised for offside at a ruck. Moray took a quick tap penalty and the forwards drove the ball to within 5 m. From there Moray worked the ball through 2 phases, sucking in defenders before moving the ball right down the back line to Hunte who crossed in the corner for his second try.

Moray pulled further ahead on 23 min. Their pack won the ball at a scrum on half way and the backs worked the ball all through a series of offloads all the way to the Orkney 5 m line before being held up. From the ruck, scrum half Mattie Smith picked up and drove over for a try. Again the conversion was narrowly missed.

Orkney responded well and set up a series of driving rucks which saw them move the ball from the Moray 10 m line to within 5 m. In spite of some heroic defence around the fringes the visitors finally broke through to score under the posts. The try was converted making it 15 – 7 to Moray after 30 minutes.

Moray were determined to maintain their momentum though and within a couple of minutes their backs used the ball from a scrum on their 10 m line to open up the Orkney defence. Again great support work and offloading allowed Josh Grundie to power into the visitors 22 and sidestep the full back before scoring.

Half time Moray 20 Orkney 7.

The second half provided great entertainment to the watching crowd with both teams determined to play attacking rugby. Strong defence from both sides meant that the half was 20 minutes old before Orkney were finally able to cross the Moray line after winning a ruck 5 m out and moving the ball wide to their wing who touched down.

Moray however were determined to keep the upper hand and from the restart kept the Orkney side under pressure. After 25 min a quick tap penalty on the Moray 22 was driven over half way by Trevor Jones and then full back Kieran Young. His offload to David Grigor allowed the winger to sprint to the Orkney line but great cover defence kept him out.

Moray kept up the pressure and Orkney were being penalised for being offside at rucks . This allowed Mattie Smith to keep the visitors pinned down in their own 22 with well placed kicks to touch.

On 30 minutes Moray finished the game off with a superb team try. A penalty kick to touch on the Orkney 5 m line led to a Moray lineout. The forwards caught the ball and sucked in the visitors defence then released the ball to the Moray backs. Stand off Duncan Steven sped through a gap in the Orkney defence before offloading to Josh Valentine who sent a superb pass wide to Toby Jefferies on the wing . Jefferies finished off the move with a well taken try in the corner.

Final score Moray 25 Orkney 12.

This was another fine display by the Moray u16 squad. The hard work done by the front 5 in scrum and rucks, created lots of quality ball which the Moray backs used very effectively. The defence again was solid and a gutsy Orkney team had to work hard for their 10 points.

Moray are away to Deeside on Sunday for their next league match.
