MORAY 24 ROSS SUTHERLAND 13 |
Tue 20th Sep 2011 |
Moray won their second RBS Caledonia Regional League Division 2 North fixture last Saturday when they defeated Ross Sutherland by 24 points to 13 at Morriston.
From the kick off, the Elgin side took the game to their opponents and forced their way to the 22 where they were handed a penalty out wide after they were blocked at the scrum. Stand off Craig Forster kicked to touch 10 metres out. Clean ball was taken at the line and a ruck set. Quick ball was moved wide and a loop by Forster created the extra man and an unconverted try was scored out wide by full-back Aled Herbert for a 5-0 lead.
Four minutes later, they increased the lead. A deft little chip by Forster in an attacking position pushed play into the 22. The attack followed up, secured the ball and a couple of phases later, wing-forward Stuart Harrington barged his way over the line for the try. Centre Andrew McBean converted for 12-0.
Moray were in control at this point but the Invergordon side came more and more into the game.
In the 27th minute, Ross reduced the lead to 12-5 after they scored a good try which emanated from their own 10 metre line and was finished off by their exceptionally quick left wing.
The closing stages of the half belonged to the visitors but the home defence held firm leaving the half time score Moray 12 Ross Sutherland 5.
The Invergordon side started the second half where they left off the first and forced their way into the 22 and were handed a penalty when the home side used hands in the ruck. The kick was slotted, reducing the score to 12-8.
From the restart, however, Ross made a hash of trying to secure the ball and prop Jason Ogg was up quickly to scoop up the ball on the 22 and barge his way to the line for an unconverted try, taking the lead to 17-8.
This was the stimulus for Moray in regaining the upper hand and in the 54th minute, extended the lead when they scored their fourth and bonus point winning try. A penalty was kicked to touch 10 metres out after the visitors came into a ruck from the side. Clean ball was taken at the line and a couple of phases later, No 8 Ross Joy broke a couple of tackles to make the line. McBean converted for 24-8.
In the final 10 minutes, the Invergordon side tried hard to get something out of the game but the home defence held them at bay until the 77th minute when they were exposed for a second time by the pace of the left wing. Ball was lost in attack in the visitors half and quickly moved wide to the flyer who outpaced the defence to score an unconverted try out wide leaving the score, the final score, Moray 24 Ross Sutherland 13.
It had been a very good and solid all round performance by the Elgin side. They had worked hard, were solid in defence and with ball in hand had always been threatening.
This Saturday, Moray play Peterhead in the first round of the RBS Caledonia Regional Bowl at Morriston Playing Fields, kick off 3pm.
