MORAY U16 V GORDONSTOUN - 4TH SEPT 2011 |
Tue 6th Sep 2011 |
Moray U16’s welcomed Gordonston to Morriston for their first home match of the season.
The game started in perfect conditions and despite a short kick off Moray settled well and had the visitors under pressure from the start. Moray were moving the ball well through hands and set up a ruck in the visitors 22. Gordonston tried to relive the pressure after they won the ball but their clearance kick was charged down by Ewan Stuart who was then able to loop in support and finish the move with a try in the corner which he converted to make the score 7-0.
Moray continued to put Gordonston under pressure but were unable to make the final pass go to hand. After 15 minutes Moray forwards set up a series of drives at the visitor’s line and Kieran Faulkner drove over to score in the corner.
Moray were relentless after this and 2 more tries quickly followed. The first was scored by Gillies Munro after a loose ball was hacked through and chased up for a score. Following this Moray were straight back into the Gordonston 22 and a set scrum delivered quick ball which was moved through the backs to Toby Jefferies on the wing who scored out wide on the right.
Moray were a threat when they had possession and form a scrum in their own 22 the ball was moved along the back line with one of the training pitch moves and Josh Grundie broke through tackles from 30 m out to score under the posts. The try was converted by Kieran Rodgers to make the half time score 29-0 to Moray.
The second half saw Moray continue to play with impressive handling and unforgiving tackling. Gordonston’s pack was finding the Moray fitness difficult to cope with and scrums were uncontested due to an injured prop.
Moray scored shortly after half time after taking a quick penalty on the Moray 10 m line and moving the ball quickly out to Keiran Young who sprinted past the Gordonston cover defence to score.
Another try followed after a scrum 5 m out from the Gordonston line. Moray cleverly switched the ball to the blind side to set up a ruck and then moved it quickly out on the open side for Toby Jefferies to score wide on the left hand side. The try was well converted by Ewan Stewart.
After this Moray were camped in the Gordonston half and won a tap penalty after a line out infringement. Lewis Scott took the ball at pace and drove over.
Moray finished the game with another forward drive and Niall Ward was supporting to drive 10 m and score near the posts. Ewan Stuart converted to make the final score Moray 53 Gordonston 0.
This was another fine performance from the whole Moray team. The squad all played a part and it was good to see the backs using the moves they have been practising to good effect. The tackling was solid and the pack was dominant in scrum. Niall Ward, Alex Dale and Kieran Elcock all made impressive debuts.
There are still areas for the team to work on in training but it has been a solid start to the season.
