BANFF U17 SEVENS - 30TH APRIL 2011 |
Wed 4th May 2011 |
Moray and Buckie U16’s enjoyed a great day at Banff 7’s to end the 2010-11 season.
The weather and pitches were perfect for 7’s rugby and all those involved made the most of the occasion to show off their sevens skills that had been honed for the previous month at training.
Moray started their round robin section against Banff and quickly got into their stride to record a convincing win.
Next up were Mackie and this proved to be a ding dong battle with both the teams exchanging tries throughout the match. In the end Mackie go the result 24-22 however Moray missed a last second conversion to tie the score and also had a higher try count which the referee seemed to miss so the result stood for Mackie
Morays’ next opponents were Ellon who had been sweeping aside their opponents in the earlier games. However this game was one of the best of the day with Moray storming out into a 3 try lead before Ellon came back into the game in the second half. It was a tense finish and Moray managed to hold out for a well earned draw 26 apiece. Again the Moray players thought they’d got more points in the bag but the result was a fair reflection of a great game.
Meanwhile the Buckie team started with tough matches against Ellon and Mackie. They were unable to beat strong opposition but did compete throughout the games. Their 3rd pool match was against Banff and they dominated the host team scoring freely throughout the match with some well worked moves.
Moray then met Buckie in their final match – this was always going to be an interesting one with both sets of players having spent the last month training together so there were no holds barred.
Moray always held the upper hand and won an entertaining contest which the Buckie team refused to give up in.
Moray and Buckie replayed each other in the Plate final and finished off a great day with a victory for the Moray lads over their teammates. It was great to get some silverware in the cabinet at the end of a long season which has been marked with some fine displays against quality opposition.
