MORAY ‘HEDGEHOGS’ 53 GARIOCH 2ND XV 7 |
Tue 1st Mar 2011 |
Moray 2nd XV, the ‘Hedgehogs’, played their second game of the season last Saturday when they convincingly defeated Garioch 2nd XV by 53 points to 7 at Morriston.
Within a few minutes of the kick-off, they had taken the lead. A scrum in the visitor’s 22 was picked up by No 8 John Stewart and he drove and made the line. Scrum-half Dale Smith landed the conversion for a 7-0 lead.
In the 12th minute, Garioch handled on the deck in the 22 and Smith stepped up, landing the penalty and increasing the lead to 10-0.
Minutes later, the Elgin side scored a second try. A penalty 5 metres out was initially driven by John Westmacott and he slipped the ball to second-row partner Lawrie McCutcheon who drove over the line for the score. Smith added the conversion points for 17-0.
In the 35th minute, Smith landed a second penalty from 30 metres for 20-0 after the Inverurie side handled at a ruck.
On the stroke of half time, the home side scored a third try. Stewart picked up the ball at the base of a scrum 10 metres out, drew the defence and then fed the ball to Smith to run in the score. He converted his own try for a half time score of Moray ‘Hedgehogs’ 27 Garioch 2nd XV 0.
In the 45th minute, Moray increased the lead. Some good interpassing and driving by the forwards saw McCutcheon reach the line for his second try. Smith converted for 34-0.
Five minutes later, Garioch reduced the lead to 34-7 when their scrum half picked up ball that had been taken against the head at a scrum 30 metres and then found a hole in the defence to score a converted try.
This was to be the visitors only points of the afternoon and the Elgin side went on to score three further tries in the last 20 minutes.
The first was scored and converted by Smith after he took an offload from full-back Neil Reece who had come into the back line in a planned move.
The second came from a good forward drive into the 22. Clean ball that was set at the ruck was quickly moved wide and stand-off Andrew McBean took the ball out wide and scored. Smith landed the conversion for 48-7.
Finally a sweeping handling move by the backs was finished off down the right flank by centre Alex Stronach when he outpaced the defence to score in the corner. Smith narrowly missed his first kick of the afternoon leaving the final score Moray ‘Hedgehogs’ 53 Garioch 2nd XV 7.
It had been an excellent afternoon for the ‘Hedgehogs’ that saw them score some good tries. The team had very much enjoyed their run out and it is really encouraging to see a 2nd XV playing again at Morrsiton.
