 RAF Kinloss progressed to the next round of the Scottish Rugby Union Regional Bowl last Saturday when they edged out Moray by 22 points to 10 in a hard fought local derby encounter.
The home side started the brighter and were dominant in the first 10 minutes. On two separate occasions, they missed kickable penalties when the Elgin side were caught handling on the ground.
It was Moray, however, that came the closest to opening the scoring in the 11th minute but the penalty attempt by full-back Andrew McBean came back off the bar.
The next 20 minutes or so became bogged down between the 22’s with any attacking moves being thwarted.
 In the 35th minute, the RAF side took the lead. A speculative kick bounced awkwardly between the Moray full-back and wing and their hesitation allowed the home left wing to prod the ball forward, gather it and score and unconverted try for a 5-0 lead.
Moray tried to reply just before half time and took a quick penalty when Kinloss were caught offside in the backs. They drove for and made it over the line but the ball was held up and the opportunity gone leaving the half time score RAF Kinloss 5 Moray 0.
 Moray pressed from the start of the second half and in the 46th minute, prop Jason Ogg drove for the line but was bundled into touch a metre short. They disrupted the resultant line and a scrum was given. Scrum-half Johnny Haslam picked up, drove and set, and No 8 Ross Joy picked up and drove over the line for the try. McBean converted to give the visitors a 5-7 lead.
Three minutes later, Kinloss regained the lead. A break in the middle of the field pulled in the defence, quick ball was moved wide and an unconverted try scored on the overlap for a 10-7 score line.
In the 57th minute it was all square at 10 points each when McBean landed a penalty after the home side handled at the bottom of a ruck in their 22.
With 12 minutes to go, the Kinloss full-back came into the line on a backs move, drifted through a gap and had the pace to make it to the line for a converted try and a 17-10 lead.
Moray tried to respond and forced their way into the opposing 22 but lost ball at a scrum and the clearance put them back into their own 22.
 In virtually the last play of the game, Kinloss put the game beyond doubt. The full-back scored his second try of the afternoon when he ran outside the defence to score an unconverted try out wide leaving the final score RAF Kinloss 22 Moray 10.
As always, it had been a hard fought encounter between these two local teams but KInloss had the upper hand on the day and were worthy of their win. It is also very sad that these fixtures will no longer happen due to the closure of the airbase as a result of the Ministry of Defence cuts.
This Saturday, Moray 2nd XV (The Hedgehogs) have another fixture when they entertain Garioch 2nd VX at Morriston at 2pm.
