RAF LOSSIEMOUTH 17 MORAY 18
Mon 15th Nov 2010
Moray went top of Caledonia League Division 2 (NW) last Saturday when they narrowly defeated RAF Lossiemouth by 18 points to 17 at the camp. These local derby fixtures are always hard fought and this encounter was no different with the Elgin side squeezing out the victory in the last play of the game.

The Flyers kicked off the game and all the early pressure was applied by them. In the 7th minute and after a number of phases in the visitor’s 22, they took the lead. Clean ruck ball was spread to the backs and the home inside-centre stepped inside the defence to score under the posts. The conversion points were added by the scrum-half for a 7-0 lead.

This was a wake up call for Moray and they came more into the game. In the 16th minute after a period of attacking play in the opposing 22, they reduced the lead. The home side were penalised for over the top at a ruck and wing Dale Smith slotted the kick for 7-3.

Seven minutes later, Moray’s stand-off Johnny Haslam was high tackled 25 metres out and a penalty was awarded. Dale Smith made the kick to close the gap to 7-6.

The Elgin side had an opportunity to take the lead just before the half time whistle when they made a number of attempts to cross the line. The home defence stood strong leaving the half time score RAF Lossiemouth 7 Moray 6.

From the restart, Moray went on the attack and within 4 minutes had taken the lead. After several phases of play in the 22, Johnny Haslam broke blind and fed full-back Ryan Anderson who made the line. Dale Smith’s conversion attempt narrowly missed leaving the score 7-11.

Four minutes later, Lossie were attacking and were given a penalty when the visitors encroached offside. The scrum-half landed the kick to reduce the leeway to 10-11.

The next 20 minutes of the game became rather bogged down in midfield but with 10 minutes to go, the Lossie side got the break through and took the lead. They forced their way into the visitor’s 22 and set up an assault on the try line. They drove for the line on several occasions and each time were repelled. Eventually, with the Moray defence tied in, they spun the ball wide to the full-back and he shimmied and made the line. The conversion was landed for a 17-11 lead.

In the last 10 minutes Moray threw all they had at the Flyers to try and turn the game in their favour. It looked like this was going to be beyond them when a pass was intercepted but Dale Smith had the pace to cover and make the tackle.

In the final play of the game, the Elgin side broke the defence and scored the try. After some driving play in the 22, they spun ball wide and Dale Smith had just enough room to beat his opposite number and score out wide. This reduced the lead to 1 point at 17-16 leaving the conversion the possibility of winning the game. Dale Smith calmly stepped up and landed the very tricky kick from the touchline sending his team mates and supporters into raptures.

Final score : RAF Lossiemouth 17 Moray 18.
