 Moray travelled to Inverness with almost a full squad to play Craig Dunain in the Preliminary Round of the Scottish Hydro Regional Bowl and ran out comfortable winners by 90 points to nil.
The first of 14 tries was scored by Scrum Half Aled Herbert who took the ball from a scrum 5 metres out to score under the posts. Fly Half Dale Smith converted.
 Five minutes later, the Elgin side stole the ball at a Craig Dunain lineout and worked across the pitch from left to right for full back Ryan Anderson to come into the line at pace and create the space for outside centre Mark Higgins to score from 10 metres. Again Smith converted.
From the restart Moray took control when Smith kicked into the left corner for wing Andrew McBean to chase. He was tackled 2 metres out but inside centre Ramsay Hogg was able to pick and drive over for the third try. Smith converted from out on the touchline with a great kick.
The fourth try was again down to full back Anderson’s pace. He collected the ball in midfield from a home defensive kick and broke left before the defence could react. A pop pass to McBean was then moved to Hogg who again used his power to drive over to score. The conversion was missed but Moray were in the lead by 26 points to nil.
Try number five started at a scrum on the half way, which the visitors passed through the hands of the three quarters for Anderson to penetrate the defence and score under the posts. Smith converted to take the score to 33 nil.
 From the kick off Moray forwards through Ross Joy and Lewis Higgins took the ball to within 10 metres of the line where Craig Dunain infringed at the ruck. Instead of taking the easy points, they elected to scrum, hence tying up the forwards. A clean hook lead to quick hands for winger McBean to score in the corner. Yet another touchline conversion by Smith took the score to 40 nil.
The last score of the half again resulted from the home side coming in from the side at a ruck, 10 metres out. A quick tap allowed second row Calum Purcell to dive over in the corner. This time Smith missed and Moray went in at half time 45 points up.
Half time saw Moray make three changes. From the kick of Craig Dunain drove into the Moray 22 and threatened to score but Anderson picked up a loose ball and ran to over half way with flanker Stuart Harrington in support. A ruck in the corner was recycled for prop Stuart Duncan to burst through at pace and score from 10 metres. Smith narrowly missed the conversion leaving the score 0-50.
Strong running from No. 8 Joy lead to a scrum 5 metres out. The visitors won the ball and moved the ball right for centre Hogg to power over for his 3rd try. Smith slotted the conversion for 0-57.
Moray worked hard to put training ground moves into practice. The 10th try came from hard running support through the forwards carrying the ball from within their own 22, breaking the gain line to put the defence under pressure and allowing the backs to move the ball left to McBean to finish a flowing move. The conversion took the score to 64 nil.
 The Elgin side replaced hatrick hero Hogg by moving flanker Harrington to inside centre. This was done as a line out was being formed on the Craig Dunain 22. They duly won the line out and Harrington took a crash ball from Smith at fly half to run through the opposition three quarters and score under the posts. Smith converted for 0-71.
From another line out, Moray scored their 12th try. The throw, by the home side, was not straight and from the resulting scrum, backs Higgins and Anderson swapped passes allowing the latter to score under the posts. Smith converted for 0-78.
 The last two tries were scored by replacement wing Alex Stronach. Each time the ball was worked wide from set pieces as Moray went through the three quarter routines. With one of these converted, the final score was 0-90.
Craig Dunain fought for the whole 80 minutes but with new players in their team, and to the sport, Moray’s pace and power was too much. No. 8, Ross Joy picked up the man of the match award.
